*is feeling murderous*

Jimmy v. sick, methinks. His CD drive and Zip drive are on crack. When I try to transfer big files by CD, he freezes. When I try to transfer by Zip, he goes into overdrive and makes noises that sound like a Zip disk being violently wrenched in two by a pack of demented ocelots. And Mrs. McCullough is going to eviscerate me with a toasting fork if I don't have my files for class tomorrow. I spent over an hour this evening photographing for class, but noooooo I can't transfer the files from the CD or the Zip disk to my laptop. Of course, I did lots of work on my other project tonight, so I'll be able to work on that, but the knowledge that Jimmy is being so unwontedly wretched makes me very cross. ::seethes:: Come on, Jimmy, even HAL is being less evil than you right now! ::stomps around:: Die.

I met this man today. Tibetan monk Palden Gyatso and the two nuns travelling with him visited my school today and spoke to us of the situation in Tibet, as well as their years of torture as political prisoners of the Chinese Communist regime. I still find it difficult to believe the sickening cruelties mankind is capable of inflicting upon one another.

Marcelina has a far more eloquent description of events, so I'll refer you to her LJ.

Tell Alicey how cool she is for drawing pictures of Abe Lincoln, swinginest President this side of the Potomac. Notice that no efforts were made to render the visage of the obviously inferior Woodrow Wilson. XD ::hearts Rebecca::

Yay! A fun day!

Marcelina and Zimo randomly appeared at my doorstep this afternoon, after walking all the way from their respective houses. I donned warmer clothes and grabbed my camera, and we were off. We then walked together all around the neighborhood, delighting in our own mini-adventures (involving a stake named "Tate" and a discarded box that became Zimo's sled), eventually deciding to walk to The Village to take in a movie. None of the movies looked interesting, so we called my mom and asked her to pick us up, as it was getting dark and cold (we had been out about 2 hours). Dad rescued us after about 20 minutes (we told mum we'd meet her at Starbucks, but it closed early because of the weather, so we were stuck outside). We stopped at Blockbuster, rented Death to Smoochy, and crashed at my house for dinner.

Death to Smoochy was quite a bit better than I thought it would be. I can't fathom why it received such abyssmal reviews from the critics -- it was quite entertaining. And it had Edward Norton, which makes me happy. Yay for the Irish mob.

And school has been cancelled yet again, so life is good. I have nothing intelligent to say.

EDIT: Marcelina has an infinitely better summary in her LJ. Read hers instead.

This makes me happy-happy.

It also makes me happy-happy to exist in Dallas, Texas, at this moment. It's barely even drizzling, yet all school sports and theatre have been cancelled because of a 60% chance of "Wintry Mix", 1/4 to 1/2-inch max. Meanwhile, up north, there's several feet of accumulation and life goes on. Southerners are such morons. I love it.

Friday Five!

1. What is your most prized material possession?

Probably either Jimmy or my tablet. Sentimentally-prized-wise, probably the calendar.

2. What item, that you currently own, have you had the longest?

My bookshelf has been in my room as long as I can remember.

3. Are you a packrat?

Find my someone who isn't a packrat. As theorized in "The Cobra Event", nearly all artists are packrats. I'm actually getting better about it, though. A few months ago, I painstakingly went through my entire room, throwing/giving/recycling away mass amounts of junk. It was impressive.

4. Do you prefer a spic-and-span clean house? Or is some clutter necessary to avoid the appearance of a museum?

Give me clutter or give me death!

5. Do the rooms in your house have a theme? Or is it a mixture of knick-knacks here and there?

Knick-knaks. Save theme rooms for the pediatrician's office.

Oh, gravy. We started choreographing "It's All the Same", my table dance. This proved quite difficult, as I'm incapable of being sexy. I'm starting to get a hang on the body rolls, but I'm going to have to pour in massive ammounts of practice in order to be truly saucy. Yay for feeling like a moron!

But I'm feeling like a happy moron, because on the way back from rehearsal, inspiration struck for one of Vimes' songs. Yay, potential! And it doesn't seem like the lyrics are going to be as difficult, compared to some of the others. Go me.

Now sleepy.

Rachel brought the Buffy musical to Sci-Fi Club today. A brief synopsis:

Rachel: Okay, this is the second of two sci-fi musicals--
Me: What's the first?
Rachel: Little Shop of Horrors.
Me: I knew that. Can I write the third?
Rachel: Be my guest.

Burkhead: What happened to Oz?
Someone: He left to face his werewolf side, but then he ((she goes on for about 20 seconds)).
Aurelia: Or in other words, his contract ran out.

[People sing and dance]
Me: Dude, I would so live there.

Me: Good gods, look at those cheekbones! You could build bookshelves on them!

Marcelina: He's not even British! He just wishes he could be British!
Me: And his eyebrows are a different color from his hair!
Burkhead: He looks like Draco Malfoy.
Me: And he can't sing.
Marcelina: Yeah! He can't sing, AND he's not British, so there's no forgiving him.
Me: Loser.

Conclusion: I would definitely live in a world where people spontaneously burst into song and dance. I'd just make sure I constantly surrounded myself with people that can sing, because otherwise it could be unpleasant. And I will always think of Michelle Trachtenberg as Harriet the Spy.

I am officially declaring tomorrow Photography Day. I'm going to go out and really learn how to use the new camera I got for my birthday (::schnoogles Otto::) and play around with my mom's Holga, which I believe has never been used. Poor Mark will be untouched. But he knows I loff him, so he hopefully won't feel sad.

I need to name our Holga. "Mark" is named for the photographer from RENT, and "Otto" is named for the Vampire iconographer from The Truth (and a slight pun on "auto", as it has the ability to go fully automatic). Perhaps "Colin", from Harry Potter? Can anyone think of any other fictional photographers deserving of name schnoogles?

And I still haven't named my tablet. Shame.

Hey, I thought I threw this away! Yay!

As printed in "Maine-E-Yak", the newsletter from my old camp. All formatting untouched.

Dear Dr. Woody: I love Valentines Day, but I have no idea how this wonderful holiday came about, signed Wondering
Dear Wonderer: There are many misconceptions about the origins of Valentines Day and I'm glad for the opportunity to set the record straight. About 1500 years ago in Budapest, Hungary, the Baroness Ophelia Valentine was courted and pursued by a young and handsome Count from Romania. The Count desperately wanted to win the heart of the Baroness Valentine so he brought her all manners of gifts. And, though she enjoyed the gifts, her heart would warm for only a short time and again grow cold. Year after year the Count brought her lavish gifts which were received, enjoyed, but soon discarded. Until one day, in an act of utter frustration, the young Count ripped out his own beating heart and handed it to the Baroness, proclaiming "There! Now are you satisfied!" The Baroness was then pleased and very much satisfied, but immediately asked the young Count what he was going to bring her next year. The young Count Dracula of Romania was driven to insanity, and as legend has it, though heartless, refused to die, and instead took to roaming the countryside in search of fresh human hearts with which he could forever please his Baroness. Valentines Day was originally a day to honor the strength and dedication of Dracula's love. Unfortunately, Dracula's search for human flesh was misinterpreted by the local population and while they kept the holiday of love, they buried the true story behind the Valentines Day celebration... Happy Valentines Day!!!!

For Yoga class in P.E. (har! I love my school!), our assignment was to go outside tonight for five minutes and look at the full moon, then write 400+ words about it. Fun. Especially because outside, it's currently 40'F (can't be bothered with finding the degree symbol), with a windchill of 31. That's 4.5'C and -1'C for you metric ladies out there. The kicker: there was no moon. An impenetrable blanket of thick, grey couds obscured everything, rendering us moonless. But it was v. pretty, so all was fine. I trooped inside, got my camera, and shot a roll of 3200-speed b&w of the tree branches against the sky, house lights, and the occasional passing car. Due to the film speed and my one-second exposures at f3, something will hopefully come out. Meh. I wish they made color 3200, because that would be nifty. ::nods::

The day before yesterday, I promised anecdotes. Here they are in more-or-less chronological order. I shall write them from the day before yesterday's POV, so that "today" means that day. Because my purpose in life is to confuse you.

1. Man of La Mancha CD

Schlien posted in her LJ a commentary about learning Spanish, and she quoted a woman who said "There's nothing in that language worth reading except Don Quixote, and a quick listen to the CD of Man of La Mancha will take care of that." What was I listening to when I read that? Man of La Mancha. I just found it amusing.

2. Religious revivals

Math class was v. interesting. We were learning about Taylor's Theorem, in which long polynomial series(es) were used to replicate complex functions. However, because the logic took a while to sink in, many of us were skeptical. I don't remember how it started, but we started turning the class into a religious revival. Dubsky would hit another point, and we would all shout "Hail Jesus!" or "Tell it to the Lord!". It took all the strength I had not to start quoting from the revival scene in Dark of the Moon.

3. Animation

In English class, "Fears and Monsters", we analyze the shadow and the unconscious. We're currently reading Othello, and my group was to figure out Iago's motivations. "What animates Iago?" Mrs. Elieff asked. "Disney?" I submitted.

4. "He only wants to be looooooved!"

Iago brainstorming process:
Marcelina: But look! He's obviously way smarter than anyone else. Or at least he thinks he is.
Me: Exactly! He makes up four-way-puns on the spot! He can break into spontaneous rhyme! That's what I like in a man.
Marcelina: And here he makes fun of them! No one guesses he's being two-faced, so he references Janus. That was deliberate!
Me: It's like dangling the bait. He wants a challenge! Or maybe... ::gasp, tangent:: Maybe he wants someone to figure him out! Maybe he's tired of being smarter than everybody. ::second gasp:: Oh my god, maybe he only wants to be looooved!"

5. Devil's Advocate vs. stubborn denial

Chungy needs to learn the difference between being a "Devil's advocate", questioning and challenging and keeping me and Schlien in-check, and just blindly denying all the evidence Marcelina and I offer.

Sample conversation:
Me and Schlien: Our point of view is correct because of thisandthisandthis... (etc)
Chungy: Prove it.
Me and Schlien: !

6. Iago Quixote

Still talking about Iago, Mrs. Elieff asked us "Why does he do the things he does?", which is incidentally the first line in "What does he want of me", from MoLM. This led to amusing Iago = Don Quixote jokes. Har.

7. Terror Drills

Thank you, oh American government, for leading the public to think that plastic sheeting and duct tape is adequate defense against chemical weapons. In addition to the Fire Drills and Tornado Drills, we now have what the students have dubbed "Terror Drills", in which all students head for designated windowless rooms, and teachers then block up the entrances and exits with duct tape. We talked about it in Physics, and we agreed that this was about as effective as holding up a sheet of paper to prevent a gunshot wound.

8. Hypocritical teachers

My photography teacher is driving me nuts. There's a list a mile long of reasons this is so. But I've ranted about it to my parents and friends at length, so I don't feel the need to rant again in my blog. It'll just get me worked up again. Grrr.

We blocked the rape/abduction scene in rehearsals today. It was so amusing, because we would really get into the scene in 15-second intervals, choreographing the next stages of the attack, then stop, and burst out laughing to break the tension. The Muleteer actors are all very gentle, friendly, fun guys, and they're absolutely terrified that they'll accidentally hurt me. Too funny. We also did the Dubbing, complete with Monty Python joke cast commentary, "The Impossible Dream", the Barber song, et all. How much do I love Jesuit theatre? Words fail me. Gravy, this show is going to be fun.

If any of you happen to be in Dallas the first week of May, consider yourselves invited.

And so ends my final theatrical production at Hockaday.

I had intended on working on my (already late) HPVP sub backstage, but I left my stylus at home, rendering me incapable of rendering. Alas. But the show was fun. Afterwards, in the set strike, Xandu (a Moldovan transfer student) was listening to "Mamaligamania". "Zdob si Zdub!" I shouted in glee. The stare I got in return will bring me delight until the end of my days. Yay for obscure knowledge of random Moldovan bands! ::high-fives Matt::

    Quotes of the Set Strike:

Matt: Anything we can do to help?
Sarah: You can be here for moral support.
    Me: How about immoral support?

Me: Is there a spanner anywhere? A spanner? Erm--I mean, wrench?
Matt: Spanner? You strange little Anglophile.

Matt: Okay, I'll just sit here and do nothing.
Me: Aww, you can be my immoral support.
Matt: Hmm... okay, you look sexy unscrewing those bolts.
Me: Wow, that must be quite an achievement. Anyone can be sexy while screwing, but it takes real talent to be sexy unscrewing. ::pause:: Did I just say that out loud?

Then it was on to the cast party, where Monty, Matt, and I plotted fiendishly our parody of the show. Then we watched the video of the production. Monty left 15 minutes in, so Matt and I presented the parody ourselves to a much smaller audience. T'was hilarious.

    Highlights:

Matt: My son is freakishly tall. I am not. My best friend is. Should I be worried?

Boy: I'm not looking to die. I'm looking for my life.
Girl: You're in a musical! You don't have a life!

Girl: Heh! A boy from Missouri on a ship called the Indianapolis. It'll probably sink.
    Together: (striking a pose) FORESHADOWING!

Me: Oh, look! A bedroom scene!
Matt: With lots of teenage girls!
    Me: I'm strangely disappointed.

Me: I am a stereotypical black man. Man, this show is like "Red White and BLING."

Girl 1: We're both women, see how we fight against the bigoted system!
    Girl 2 (Matt): GIRL POWER!

Pregnant Girl: Were you this tired at 5 months?
Mother: But didn't Frank leave 7 months ago?

Matt: By the power of Greyskull, IT'S OVER!!!! ... No, not the play, the war! Sit back down!

Girl: Of course he'll be different! He's been on a ship for three years with only men!

One-Armed Soldier: Those games of naked Twister got a bit out of hand.

Anyway, our miniAudience loved it. Then we all went home. And I'm sleepy. Was that a weekend? I can honestly say that I didn't have a moment of free time. Heck, I get more free time on an average school day. I hope I can finish all my homework...

    Monica: *schnoogles Percypoo*
    Priscellie: fairly well, I guess
Priscellie: Oliver's robes are being stubborn. And that sounds really amusing out of context.
    Monica: LOL!
    Priscellie: *toys with Oliver's robes*
Monica: Percy will get jealous, he will

Meanwhile, Rebecca is my hero for pointing out this link. I've been wanting to do that for years.

I'm taking back a lot of the negative things I've said about Red White and Swing. True, the dialogue was left quite a bit to be desired. True, some of the characters, scenarios, and setups could have been better thought out. But seeing Mr. Blaydes before us all, giving us a pep-talk, blinking back tears, was enough to make nearly everyone in the cast reconsider all the derogatory comments we had made over the past few months. I felt especially moved, because his reaction was almost exactly how I envisioned myself on the opening night of Men At Arms, should it ever be staged. I wouldn't care if it was bad or good or what anyone thought of it at that moment. Years of work would come together on a single point in time, from the opening of the curtains to the final bows. And the world would experience something never before seen -- something original, fresh, and new.

Red White and Swing has come quite a long way since the preview readthrough last spring. It's become integrated, which is my most important criterion in a musical. And the music is upbeat, memorable, and a fitting representation of the time. True, he didn't write it, but heck, you could say the same about Moulin Rouge (though to be frank, there's no comparing the two). Though I still wish some things could have gone differently, I was glad to be a part of it. Two more performances, and the world premiere of Red White and Swing will come to a close. Who knows if and when it will be resurrected? For all we know, this could be the last performance.

In the meantime, I'll be working on Men at Arms.

Aaaaand the preview performance is over and done! Just three more shows to go and I'll be home free! ::grooves::

Today was a good day, all in all. That's because most of it was spent sleeping. This morning, I woke up at my usual 6:10, but my body overruled my sense of routine through sheer, indominable will, informing my brain that today would be declared a snow day and school would be cancelled, despite the certain lack of snow on the ground. Then my dad woke me up at 7, and I grudgingly went off to school.

Physics was uneventful. Almost no one had done their homework, so I was in the clear. But in homeroom/advisory, I suddenly felt as though someone had dumped a ton of boulders on my head. I was so zombielike in art class that Mrs. McCullough kicked me out of the room and told me to either go home or to the infirmary and get some rest. Because there was no way I was going to drive in such a state and I couldn't reach my parents, I trudged over to the infirmary, recounted my story to the nurse, and snored peacefully until I was awakened in time for my last-period class. 10:15 to 2:30. Mmm, sleep. I felt like a new person.

Good gravy on a stick, I'm exhausted. Not only is school tiring in itself (with a hefty dose of senioritis in the mix), but from school (4:00), I immediately go to Jesuit for MoLM rehearsals, then at 5:30, leave early in order to make the call at Hockaday. RW&S generally ends at 10, whereupon we're given nearly an hour's worth of Notes. Then I can go home and start my homework. Arg. I'll be so happy when RW&S is over! Fortunately, tonight it's raining, and the low is 19, so Mr. Blaydes let us go without reading notes tonight. Hurrah, home early!

Meanwhile, MoLM rehearsals are beyond fun. Today, we choreographed (among other things) "It's All the Same", where I get to dance on a table and belt angrily at a bunch of raucous Muleteers. As this is our first time through the scenes, for the music, Mrs. Felice is just playing a recording for the songs. No one expected me to sing along. I've had the song memorized for months, but this was the first time I'd really sung it outside my car. To my surprise, I sang quite a bit better than I imagined I would. As I belted the last note, the cast gave me an ovation. XD Gravy, I love Jesuit theatre.

I'd write more, as I can think of plenty of things to write about, but I think I'll wash off my makeup and go to sleep. That sounds good. ::falls asleep at the keyboard::

Let's pray for a snow day, ne?

Squee, squee, squee, squee, squeeeeeeeeee! Today is the first day of Man of La Mancha rehearsals, also Hell Week for Red White and Swing. Thank gravy our call for RWS is 5:30 so that I can attend both rehearsals. Hurrah for being in multiple shows at once!

Mrs. Hubbard, the costume lady, told us we all needed 1940's hairstyles. I asked her if I could be Veronica Lake. She laughed at me. Oh well. ::pokes Monica::

Blogger is refusing to publish, so I think I'll take this moment to acknowledge the sheer kick-bootyness of my boots. Apologies for those who have already seen this picture several dozen times. I quite like it.

Oh -- and my mom has been rooting though old baby-me stuff, and she found this. I was such a cute baby. ::snerks::

I'd make a good assassin. I'd just walk in a room, clad in my cool assassin clothes, and people would die of sexiness.

Ah, the things I go through to make references for Monica... at least this means we have lovely young!Vetinari art in the near future! ::looks around for someone to actually take the pictures so she won't have to use a mirror::

    EDIT: Yay! Appreciation!

Once I had gotten through the initial shock, my first thought was "Too bad they don't have Feynman around to solve this one." What I really want to know now is what happened. It's almost like some sort of hubris -- just when we think NASA is invincible, and we believe that all the kinks have been worked out of space flight, something like this happens.

I wonder if I would have heard anything, had I been awake. Instead, I was dreaming about being attacked by sharks. Somewhat near the end of the dream, there was a gigantic wave that crashed over me, making me lose hold of the dock I had just managed to reach. I wonder what time that part of the dream occurred.

    Meanwhile, still in shock.

I feel really awkward about posting this, as I almost feel a day of Blog silence is in order, but I just wanted to pause to say that Matt, Renata, and Burkhead prod all sorts of buttock. Matt got in to Trinity (TX, not CN), Renata got in to Grinnell, and Burkhead got in to Davidson. Huzzah for you guys! ::grooves::
