The Cult of Lincoln

I got Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men this afternoon, yet I'm going to sleep as soon as I finish my English homework. Such is my t00bish devotion to my role.

This show is going to be fabulous, methinks. Lauren and I convinced Mr. Oliver and Miss Morton to drop "It's All The Same" another minor third, making it far more singable and quite a lot more earthy and wenchy. Huzzah! Opening night tomorrow! ::squees:: Again, everyone is invited, if you happen to be in the Dallas area. Jesuit, at 7:00. Bwee!

My final dress rehearsal as Aldonza went swimmingly. I am so in love with my costume, it's not even funny. And yay, we have footage! So now I just have to convince Burkhead to let me use her computer to upload various scenes for your enjoyment. Huzzah!

Now sleep.

Aaaaaaaaarg, I hate my life. Perfect bloody timing, ha. I just got my period today, which is very evil, as I always get asolutely horrible cramps on the second and fourth days, which coincide perfectly with my final rehearsal and my first performance as Aldonza. Evil, evil, evil. ::stockpiles Aleve::

Saw Antigone, which absolutely rocked. Of course, I got to pitying Creon a heck of a lot more than I pitied Antigone. Heck, she was an insolent upstart. Pish posh to the chorus' feeble "moral law" excuse! Anyway, Matt played one of the guards, who were hilarious. They definitely stole the show humor-wise, while Xandu's Creon was the high point dramatically. Huzzah!

Quotes of the Day:

I can't help thinking that if I put milk in my tea, the British Empire will disown me. --Me

Rachel: "Pinky and the Brain" did a parody of "Man of La Mancha" once. Brain sang "To Scheme the Impossible Scheme".

Note to a Certain Cast Member Who Will Remain Anonymous:

If you want to slander me and say I can't act, sing, or dance in order to make you feel better about yourself, go ahead. Just take care not to say such things in front of fellow cast members who have seen both of us perform and can decide for themselves. Or in front of my friends. Don't think I don't eventually hear every word you say against me.

And you know what? It doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact, I find it hilarious. Don't think I haven't seen people acting out of their own insecurities before. I'm going to continue being nice to you, regardless of what you do or say to me. What exactly do you hope to achieve? You'll only make yourself miserable, and your behavior will turn people against you, not me.

Cordially,
Priscilla

Oh -- as for Mrs. McCullough murdering me! She actually wasn't mad at all. She loved the direction it was going, and was generally pleased with my work. She could tell that I had put a great deal of effort into it, so she didn't go nuts. Joy! As long as I finish it this weekend, life will remain lovely.

Ah, I forgot to mention why we got out of rehearsal at 9 last night. We got our costumes! They're not horrible, but they could be better. A lot better. At least I have some red in mine, a necessity for prominent figures onstage. Meanwhile, my friends' costumes were pretty hilarious. Among the gypsies and moors, the gypsy dancers had traditional gypsy belly dancer-type garb. I turned to Emily, a Pratchett fan, and said "Pass me your fez, Corporal Beti."

Too amusing.

I feel so sorry for Emil, who plays Dr. Carrasco. He's absolutely blind in the Knight of the Mirrors outfit. He has to do all this intimidating stuff, but he can't see a thing. And the sounds guys hadn't rigged his mic up properly, so he had to shout his lines inside his very echoey helmet, which made him temporarily deaf. And afterwards, he couldn't get his helmet off, so half the cast had to take turns trying to pry it from his head. Meanwhile, we were all giggling madly. Ricky, Stage Manager Extraordinaire, kept yelling at us to stop laughing. Meanwhile, Mrs. Felice was crying with tears of mirth. "How?" she asked him. ::hugs Emil:: Poor guy. Fortunately, we figured out how the helmet is supposed to be removed (there's a catch), but it doesn't fix the problem of how he sees out of it. Hopefully we'll find some solution in the next two rehearsals! Eep!

I also feel sorry for Lobo, who plays Sancho. His knee-length trouser things are slightly too small for him, so that when he got down on one knee to recite the missive, he first had to resolve uncomfortable bunching. Also, when he leapt into the air on the line "He fights!", it resulted in unfortunate straining. Ouch. Mrs. Felice's "note" for him was "Brian, wear a jo-- nevermind."

Once we sort out costume issues, this show is going to be fabulous. And my mom will take pictures Monday, probably, so I'll post them later that week, as not to spoil the fun for the Lincolnites that are seeing the show live. Hurrah! Wednesday and Friday, kids. ::bounces::

Just got home, oddly enough. It's not even hell week, and I got out of rehearsal at 9! Lunacy, I tell you. Disappointing, as I had hoped to see Matt & Co. in Antigone, but it started at 7:30. Hah. I guess I'll have to see if tomorrow night.

We got the MoLM posters from the printers today. Shooooo lovely, so precious. ::pats them, but carefully, as not to make fingerprints on their lovely, shiny surface:: You can see the design here, except the white bit is bright red, the dark red is navy-ish blue, and the black is white. ::nods:: I'm putting them up tomorrow morning. I feel a bit nervous about stepping on Antigone's toes, as they just got their posters up a couple days ago for a performance this week (and ours are a lot more eye-catching XD), but bah, I don't care. We have as much of a right to advertise as they do, so I'm not concerning myself with it.

I want to draw right now, but I have massive amounts of work for Studio Art due Thursday, and I'd rather spread it over two days than kill myself tomorrow night. Poo. ::trudges off::

Whupped heiney on my James Fee presentation. Go me! ::grooves:: The girls in my class complained that I was going to mess up the curve. Yay overachievers!

Also, today was the first day back for rehearsals after the horrid week-long Easter break respite. Quite glad to see Tom, Eugene, Margot, Gaby, et all again. I was amused, as Tom proposed a petition to get me to perform all four nights, which was enthusiastically supported by the people in our conversation. Certainly not going to happen, but warmfuzzy-inducing nonetheless. Besides, I have prom. Bleh, I wish it were a different night. I'm not going to be able to be present at the final performance, where we give flowers to the directors and managers and such. Or the set strike. Or the cast party. Wah.

queekie99: there's about thirty of them
queekie99: in a large plastic box

queekie99: and it's about 10 feet up in my closet.

queekie99: er
spockmonkey4: Carrot?
queekie99: Jesus?
spockmonkey4: *snorks*
spockmonkey4: Carrot is Jesus!
queekie99: most likely
queekie99: and Percy is God
queekie99: uh oh.
spockmonkey4: and Boba Fett
queekie99: if we pay attention to the Divine Trinity
spockmonkey4: Carrot is the son of Percy? That explains a lot.
queekie99: Carrot is Jesus, and Jesus is God, then Percy is Jesus who is Carrot who is Jesus who is God and who is also Percy who is also God and Boba Fett is God too and thus Bo..
queekie99: ...der.
spockmonkey4: *confounds Alicey*

Holy cow. Ancient files upon ancient disks! I found my first attempt at Potterfic, which unbeknownst to me at the time sparked the Percy Weasley fandom. I found a ridiculous quantity of etymological research I did for my failed Marauderfic. I found pages of early HP4GU message clippings I saved for one reason or another. I found parodies I started, but never completed. And I found this gem from October 2000, back when RML was alive and kicking. Friday Five!

1. Who is your favorite celebrity?
I'm quite fond of Neil Gaiman, because he's such a nice guy and doesn't let celebritydom get to his head, but no obvious "favourite" comes to mind.

2. Who is your least favorite?
The Olsen Twins. They count as one entity.

3. Have you ever met or seen any celebrities in real life?
Neil Gaiman (hugged), Adam Pascal (hugged), Luke Wilson, Lisa Loeb, and all actors I have ever stalked (Scott Hunt, Heather Headley, Shere Rene Scott, etc).

4. Would you want to be famous? Why or why not?
I'd love to be cult-famous. Like how most of the world has no idea who Alan Lee is, but those that do adore him. I suppose I'd like to be known for Men at Arms: The Musical (in my delusions of grandeur).

5. If you had to trade places with a celebrity for a day, who would you choose and why?
It would be fun to be J.K. Rowling for a day, so that I could go through her files and read the next HP book early (and send the file to my friends) and find out what will happen in future books.

But then again, nothing is really compatible with Native Son. I was amused at the truth in Marcelina's comment that she read A Clockwork Orange afterward to cheer her up. Gravy, that book is amazing. Hooooome! Neglected to mention that I would be at a Fine Arts festival in Fort Worth over Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and would therefore be away from the computer. Hurrah for ISAS! No one really knows what it stands for, so a girl I met there suggested "I Suck At Sports". We all readily concurred. Because the festival has gotten so huge over the years, Hockaday had to cap the number of students on campus at a time, and therefore only the Performance artists got to go on Friday, the main festival day. Because I only came for Studio Art and Photography, I was out of luck. Bah. Of course, the teachers put together a day of museum visits and such to keep us occupied, so it wasn't a complete waste.

Thursday: Carried lots of really heavy boxes for Mrs. Yoshii, hung my photographs, hung my art piece, t00bed about. After Hockaday's rather useless photography critique, I generally ignored all workshops and galleries and turned my attention to the Showcase Drama category, where all the musicals were. Saw the tail end of a performance of the first act of Romeo and Juliet, which looked more like RENT than anything else, then highlights from The King and I, including the at-least-15-minute "Poor Eliza" sequence, which was hilariously well executed and summarily well mocked by my friends when the show was over.

It said in our schedules that South Pacific was next, but something was switched, and Witchitaw's Les Miserables took its place. GOOD LORD, IT WAS AMAZING. Every one of those kids could have gone straight to Broadway. Easily the most powerful high school production I've ever seen; "A Little Fall of Rain" had me in tears. Gravy. Next up was South Pacific, but hell, nothing could have followed Les Mis.

Friday: We went to a bunch of different museums, each of which I had seen at least twice in the past three months. Joy. We got an hour of free time afterwards, where I worked on a drawing to replace that godawful Men at Arms: The Musical picture. A "before and after" study, I suppose, to see how my drawing ability has progressed in the last year. I was quite satisfied at the results. I'll post it when I'm finished.

Afterwards, we drove to UT Arlington (whyyy???) to see Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, which was excellent. The actor playing Henry was fantastic. Gravy, I love Tom Stoppard. Must see/read more of his plays. ::nods::

Saturday: I worked more on my drawing for a while, then went to the 2-D Art critique, which was absolutely worthless. I think our adjudicator was senile. Seeing my image of a goddess bust in charcoal and acrylic on mylar, he suggested I try eraser drawings, which was pretty much exactly what I did, only about 7 steps backwards. I had used erasers and turpenoid to remove the charcoal and re-expose the mylar, so he was basically telling me how to do something I'd obviously already done. The ridiculousness was even worse for Peri, who did a collaged self-portrait of faces, hands, and feet, using layer upon layer of tracing paper to achieve the effect. He told her to experiment with layers, suggesting techniques she already used in the image. The entire art department shared a unified "WTF?" Hurrah for useless art critiques.

But all was not in vain, because it turned out that there were seperate adjudicators who gave critiques to students who signed up on a certain list. I got a woman named Andrea to critique my photography, and it was a fabulous experience. She was genuinely intrigued by my work and offered insightful suggestions and dialogues. I discovered more about my own work than I have in ages. It gave me quite a lot of enthusiasm to undertake future projects. I think I'll print some more tonight, in fact.

And now I'm back home. I feel especially happy because on the bus rides, I read The Phantom Tollbooth (Norton Juster) and The Book of Three (Lloyd Alexander -- part of a series), which were two of my absolute favourite books in third and fourth grade. Being a senior has given me the desire to reexplore the things I loved as a wee kidlet, and these books were the first step. Yayfun!

So all is merry, and I'm back. Now it's time to catch up on what I missed. ::dives bravely into her ridiculously long LJ Friends list::

Spam titled "Priscilla, Rates at an All-time Low. Do Yourself a Favor". The text:

But let his Grace, when he shall hear my name,
Say only this: Gardiner procured the same.

Here is your son, come to take his leave.

"Like millions of your fellow Americans, you enjoy ice cream but do NOT enjoy seeing your money funneled to wacko left-wing causes. We are not ashamed of America. We think it's the best country ever, and so we have set out to make the best ice cream ever!"

I want to believe this is a joke.

Mom: Time to wake up, Priscilla.
Me: wsflg?
Mom: Remember, it's Spring Forward, Fall Back, so we lose an hour.
Me: ::looks blearily at clock:: ::is suddenly very awake:: So it's almost 1 o'clock, then?
Mom: Yes.
Me: Doesn't my AP Physics practice exam start at 1?

I'm sure you can guess how the morning went from there.

Into the words
That trip your lip, and fry your brain
And sprain your tongue
Into the words
So complicated grown-ups find it scary.

Saw a student production of the first act of "Into the Woods". So much fun! I love that musical.

Meanwhile:

Yesterday: Uncomfortably warm.
Today: Golf ball-sized hail.

I can't wait to get out of this godforsaken Texas weather. ::launches self at PENN::

Copied straight from the Discworld Fanfiction egroup. But I'm sure VimesLady, who wrote the post, won't mind. Spreading the love!

The New Discworld Companion has just been released. I'm expecting my copy by the first of April. Those of you who have the original 'Discworld Companion' (and I pity the Discworld fanfic author who does not) are familiar with Stephen Briggs' fascinating and painstakingly detailed documentation of Discworld facts. The new version covers especially the books from 'Jingo' straight through 'Night Watch', and is a 544 page paperback with an awesome Paul Kidby cover. Stephen is the ultimate annotator of Discworld facts, and he works very closely with Terry in this regard. This means that Terry very often gives him background information which never quite made it into the novels, as well as occasional glimpses into future books. Stephen also mentioned at last year's convention that PTerry was actually writing some of the material himself, when Briggs found himself seriously short of meeting deadlines. I am sooo excited; I've been waiting for this book for years!

The Wee Free Men is the next novel due out by Pratchett. This will be the second Discworld children's book, the first being 'The Amazing Maurice'. It features a 9-year-old who just may be a witch, and is described by Terry as "a classic fairy story but with the addition of the Nac Mac Feegle." Those are the little blue guys introduced in 'Carpe Jugularum'. I have seen several Proof copies of this book on eBay, but none, unfortunately, at a price I could afford to consider. The 279 page hardcover, complete with a Paul Kidby cover, is due to be released on May 1.

The Art of Discworld is scheduled for release on October 16, 2003. Filled with colour illustrations by the amazing Paul Kidby, with text provided by Pratchett himself, the 112-page large-size hardback is being billed as a companion to 'The Last Hero'. Personally, however, I am envisioning a deluxe, much expanded version of 'The Pratchett Portfolio'. We are promised a compendium of Discworld characters including the City Watch, the Witches, and the Wizards (and Wizzard), as well as locations such as Lancre, Uberwald and, of course, Ankh-Morpork. I have always considered Kidby's work as canon, since PTerry previews everything he publishes. Besides, the man seems to have an ability to get into my head and put onto paper the images Terry has painted in my imagination. This is another book I have been hoping for for years.

Monstrous Regiment, the next novel in the Discworld series, is scheduled for publication in November, 2003. Having heard Pratchett read a passage from his computer screen last September, I can tell you that it deals with a young woman, Polly, who disguises herself as a male in order to enlist as a soldier, hoping to locate her brother who has gone missing in the war. I'm guessing that this is the war between Borogravia and Mouldavia mentioned in 'Night Watch', but don't quote me on that. I do know that the protagonist finds herself in a regiment that includes a troll and a vampire. Although some characters from past books appear in minor roles, all the major characters are new.

Excuse me while I explode in a fit of overjoyed squeeage. *bursts*

::snorks:: I love my the girls in my art class. Mrs. McCullough announced that we were to hang our exhibition today, and Aschley reminded her that we needed advertisements, so we started to brainstorm for what we could say. We needed something clever. I suggested "Come see the exhibitionists!" as a joke, but everyone liked the idea, so it stuck. While I matted artwork, Aschley took Polaroids of Jayna from the back that made her look like she was flashing people, covering herself up with a Hockaday blazer. I took my umbrella out of my car, wrote "AP ART EXHIBITON" on it in masking tape, and Aschley took a Polaroid of me looking as though I only had the umbrella to cover myself up with. Then Jayna took a picture of Aschley, looking shocked. Over the weekend, Aschley is going to t00b about with a photocopier and blow up the images life-size. T'will be hilarious. I'll take pictures of the resulting posters and post them here. Muaha!

I started to read Dune this evening, and at the mention of the Bene Gesserit "Littany Against Fear", I started wondering where it was I'd first heard it. I remembered a monotone voice full of comedic dread uttering "I must not fear, fear is the mindkiller, fear is that little death that brings total oblivion" very quickly, over and over. I wondered about where I'd heard it before last year, when we watched the Sci Fi Channel's 6-hour version in Sci-Fi Club, but I couldn't place it. For the sake of my continued sanity, I'm quite relieved to realize where I first heard it. Peter Puppy, from the WB show "Earthworm Jim". Wow, how many years ago did I watch that? It was part of my morning line up that consisted of Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Nickelodeon's "Real Monsters". And after a brief Google, I find that "Real Monsters" joined the Nicktoons in 1993, ten years ago. Good gravy, that's half my life!

I always find it so pleasantly surreal when I recall something from my childhood. For instance, when I was at Parsons, I dreamed large chunks of the movie "The Point", which I last saw when I was in 1st grade. I think it's part of being a senior that makes me want to revisit the things I loved when I was a wee kidlet, like the book "The Phantom Tollbooth", the first book I read aloud to my parents since the time I was first learning to read. I must have reread that book 15 times -- probably more. I wonder if the Lower School library has a copy.

Meanwhile, I'll be trying to dredge up memories of Rainbow Brite. My sister would always insist on being ALL the "Color Kids", making me play the parts of Murky and Lurky. Maybe I'll rewatch some early Simpsons episodes and laugh at how many jokes I never understood. Maybe I'll rent "Mystery Mansion", the movie I rented almost every single time my family went to our old lakehouse thing. I'm slowly working through the Beatles movies, which I last saw in 2nd grade. But now it's your turn to help me. For Priscilla's Sanity, Name That Movie: Mt. Rushmore talking, with the heads moving back and forth. It acted as a sort of guiding figure. A warning: "Captain Smudge is following the fireworks." I think it involved a friendly sea creature, most likely "Serendipity" or something. Comment if you remember the movie I'm referring to.

And now, if someone can only tell me what movie the line "Thank you for that ride down Amnesia Lane, gentlemen" is from, I would be a happy, happy person.

Breaking News:

  • Renata prods a great deal of buttock, as she sent me a t-shirt from the "Beatle Bar". ::dons shirt and strikes a pose::
  • Alicey is the April Fools Day MASTER. Cower before her coolness.
  • I got to meet a Physics teacher that is coming to my school next year. He's a huge Terry Pratchett fan. Huzzah!
  • All loff the MoLM poster design! Go me!

April Fools was so much fun. All day, I wore around a plastic viking hat to add a bit of surrealism to everyone's day. Then I borrowed the short haired wig I wore in "The Pajama Game" to wear to MoLM rehearsals. Mrs. Felice has emphasized over and over that none of us are to cut out hair until after the show, so I hoped to give her a little scare. Every single cast member did either a double or triple-take when they saw me, horrified by my lack of hair. Even Mr. Oliver, the music director, was duped. I was quite disappointed when Mrs. Felice recognized that it was a wig right away. Ah well, it was fun. Afterwards, the wig got passed around backstage, where a bunch of the guys tried it on and all looked generally like idiots. One guy looked disturbingly like Austin Powers. Muah!

Anyway, today we did the last 1/3 of the show, where I got to sing quite a bit. I got applause for "Aldonza"; go me. And my mom, who was taking a sneak peek in the audience, cried at "Dulcinea". Gravy, this show is going to rock. ::squeals::

April Fools I think is one of my favourite days of the year.

And this is not an April Fools day joke, but it's still hilarious. As is this. Hurrah for irony!
