Flans: Here's a transcript of Joss' message to the fans at the Serenity screenings. Spoiler-free.

Just watched the bootleg Rent trailer from the Compulsive Bowlers boards. It's hard to see much of anything, but I'm seriously impressed. I thought Chris Columbus would absolutely maim the film, but I really liked what I saw. I look forward to when an official source puts out the trailer! We could only see about half the screen in the current boot.

Huzzah. Tried a different torrent provider, and this time the Lost finale came through perfectly. I do miss Penn's high-speed ethernet, though. I used to be able to download an episode in under two hours.

Spent 20 hours downloading the Lost season finale, only to find that the file didn't work. I miss BTEFnet.

Oh, and just to clear something up, the rant about no one commenting on my hair was directed to my IRL friends. I went to Hockaday graduation last night to see my ikkle wooblets graduate, and I expected people to notice my hair. Even the people that read my blog and knew how important this was to me didn't say a word until I deliberately asked them.

I need to be told that it looks okay, and I need to hear it often. All my life I've had long hair. I've even observed that my subconscious treats long hair as a sign of goodness in general, and short hair as a form of punishment. It used to be that if I was ever upset at someone, I'd dream about them with hacked-off hair.

Bah.

The official website for Tim Minear's new show The Inside is up! Premieres June 8th. Maybe if I actually watch this one, it won't get cancelled. Because yes, I hold that kind of power.

Did I know that Adam Baldwin (Jayne) was going to be in the main cast?

Now that's bizarre. My mom left a few pages in my room, torn from a magazine, from an article on the Dali exhibit in Philadelphia. The top page just suddenly floated about four feet, from the floor next to the end of my bed to the doorway to my bathroom. Obviously it was the light breeze from the air conditioner vent, but it was still surreal. An article about Dali flying across the room... would that be meta-surrealism?

I love my house. I always like to joke that it's haunted. My bedroom door has a trick to it so that it's difficult to open from the outside, but just requires a certain twist of the knob to open from the inside. Every so often, this door will randomly open, with no one nearby. It freaks my friends out whenever it happens. Also, because it's an old house and it's settling on its foundation, occasionally I'll hear creaks that sound like someone walking around my parents' room, when I'm the only one in the house. I've actually investigated the sounds on more than one occasion, thinking that someone had broken in.

And that's your tangent for the evening.

You know what the only thing worse than a traumatic haircut is? Getting a traumatic haircut and having NO ONE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT. This is the shortest my hair has been since INFANCY. Everyone I know FAILS. I don't care if you haven't seen me in two years, REMARK UPON MY SHORN SCALP!

The new trailer for Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is out! Unfortunately, it's only available through AOL (at least, until the fans get a hold of it, rip the file, and make it available to the net in a dozen easily-downloadable formats). It didn't work properly when I tried opening it in Firefox, but for some reason, I had no problem when I tried opening it with IE. That's certainly a first.

My hair is starting to grow on me. And that sounds really funny if read in the wrong context. Because it lost so much of the length, it's a lot lighter, so it holds curl better. Of course, this makes it look even shorter, but oh well. It looks healthier. I've actually been considering cutting my hair for a while now, and while I was still of the belief that I wouldn't, maybe this is fate kicking me in the shins and saying "Stop whining!"

I think right now I just need to get over myself and sit back and let my hair grow. Feh.

Note to self: When getting dramatic haircut, don't do it with a stylist you've never met. I wanted to get 4-5 inches off to even up the back and get rid of broken ends, but it looks like he hacked off more than 6. This is the shortest my hair has been in memory. I AM NO LONGER A MEMBER OF THE LHFCXDE. Plus, without asking me, he decided to cut my hair in a straight line across the back, so that it would be longer in the front. In the past, I've always done it the other way around. Coupled with Serenity trauma, this was not a good morning.

The afternoon, however, was fabulous. Mom gave me the go-ahead to get my new computer, and I keep going over the specs list and drooling. Dell Precision M70 Notebook with Windows XP Pro, 1 Gb RAM, 100 Gb hard drive, and 8x DVD+RW. The LCD is a 15.4" widescreen WUXGA, and the laptop itself is only 7 pounds and 1.6" thick. If you ever encounter a laptop sexier than that, I want it caught and shot now. And now, I have a week to decide on an appropriate name for it! *does a dance of joy*

JOSS WHEDON YOU UNUTTERABLE BASTARD.

Unarguably one of the best movies I've ever seen. (Can unarguably and inarguably be used interchangably?) Just amazing. I laughed, I cried (I sobbed for thirty minutes solid), I cheered wildly. And I don't think anyone would consider it a spoiler if I praised Joss for keeping his promise and having no sound in space. I went in expecting a ramshackle musical score and a barrage of unfinished special effects shots, but the movie seemed polished to me. There were some timing (timering? Where you adjust color and light levels and stuff for printing the film.) issues in some shots, but aside from that, nothing jumped out at me as something that needed to be fixed. Though I bemoan having to wait until late September to see the movie again, I'm so glad that Joss got the extra time to perfect the film.

I won the costume contest for my Zoe outfit. It turned out that it was just the four of us and some random guy that came as Mal that dressed up at all. Well, there were a handful of Blue Sun shirts and the like, but no one else serious. My prize was an autographed copy of Finding Serenity, signed by Jane Espenson. I won another copy of the book in the trivia contest, but traded with Rachel, who had won the Joss Whedon biography, as I had purchased a copy of Finding Serenity when it first came out.

The trivia itself was embarassingly easy; Rachel won her prize for completing the phrase "two by two, ___", and I got mine for naming Mal's home planet. And here, when we found out about the trivia contest, Rachel and I were quizzing each other on stuff like "Where is Badger from?", "Name as many hat-trick actors (and their roles) as you can" and my all-time favourite, "Which two characters are seen using sugar tongs during the course of the series?"

Anyway, I'll post pictures tomorrow. I'm off to cry myself to sleep now.

ETA: Um, if anyone thinks I'm saying too much, let me know and I'll edit this entry.

I am seeing Serenity in less than five hours. It does not compute. I'm already in my Zoe costume (did I mention I switched? I couldn't find a proper jumpsuit for Kaylee), even though I won't leave to pick up Marcelina for another hour.

Don't worry, Cult of Lincoln will remain completely Serenity spoiler-free. I will squee and gush, certainly, but I will disclose no details, plot- or character-wise.

You know, more and more I keep thinking I should just switch to LiveJournal. The LJ-cuts alone would be worth it.

And hey, my half birthday was three days ago! Usually I'm more aware of stuff like that. My sister and I used to do all sorts of silly things for each other's fractional birthdays, when we were ikkle. I remember her giving me three quarters on a particular three-quarter birthday.

Link grab bag!

From LifeHacker, via Friede. Murdered blogger’s post leads to killer.

From a Joss Whedon interview: "Shaun of The Dead. That's the kind of movie that makes me want to make movies." Shabooyeah.

OH MY GOD. Michelle Trachtenberg and Sean Maher starring in Lifetime's "The Dive From Clausen's Pier". Dawn/Simon, EW EW EW IT HURTS MY BRAIN.

Umm, quick topic change. Tycho of Penny Arcade is among the golden few seeing Serenity tomorrow. Hopefully this should quell rumors of River being made out of chocolate.

What do you mean, I forgot about Towel Day? Gah, I suck. I got all caught up in the rememberance of the People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road and it slipped my mind.

Sooo, Lost season finale. First of all, EEEEEEEE, CHARLIE/CLAIRE OMG OTP LIEK WOAH. *coughs* Secondly, WHY IS EVERYONE A MORON?

Charlie: Stupid! Stupid stupid stupid!
Sayid: Jerk!
Kate: Darwin Awards candidate1. Why was she running around and jumping when she was under the impression she was wearing a backpack full of exceedingly tempermental dynamite?
Jack: Chauvanist! Why couldn't you have given Kate the dynamite and saved us all a lot of irritation?
Professor Redshirt: Haw haw! That was the funniest example of spontaneous human combustion since Monty Python.
Sawyer: Looked like a dork with his hair pulled back. But boys that sing are awesome, so yay.
Hurley: Awww, I could never be upset at you! SO MUCH HURLEYLOVE.
Locke: Also great. BZZZT! *loves* But every so often, you did this creepy smile that made you look like you were going to molest someone. Stop doing that.
Claire: Not stupid, but please, get your priorities in order! You give him a peck on the cheek for making you a Dutch baby carrier, but only a hug when he saves your infant son from a psychopathic French woman intent on trading said son to a bunch of murdering savages? The boy deserves mad smoochies. Make him forget all about the Smackfarthing!

And I was exceptionally cross at Sayid, as he made me--for the briefest of instants--think that Sayid/Shannon was sweet. But then the camera went back to her and I was like "oh." You don't just forgive stuff like that. Also: maiming Charlie and taking him unnecessarily through the den of Smackfarthing. But a bit of my grudge against Shannon was lifted when she didn't resort to feminine wiles to get help with all the stuff she had to carry, and she instead told Sayid that she had everything under control when he offered to help her, so my intense loathing of Shannon has slightly diminished. And then, Sayid has his awesome moments where I can't help but love him and all is forgiven. "Do not hit me again" and similar. Yeah, Sayid is awesome. MASSIVE Sayid love.

As for Charlie, I have to quote lots42: "Burning his last bit of drugs got him his guitar. Maybe he's hoping if he burns the new batch, he'll get a shiny new bicycle and a hot bikini for Claire." Humorous observations like this are the only thing preventing me from smacking the boy upside the head. And in the end, Danielle did the right thing and gave up Turniphead without a fight. Charlie really didn't need to tear into her like that.

Also, "They were coming for the boy." Man, I watch 13 episodes of Wonderfalls and I didn't notice that it could just as easily be referring to Walt as Turniphead. I fail at life television.

So how many Jossed Charlie/Claire fanfiction writers will suddenly decide that Aaron is Charlie's middle name? XD

When did Sawyer call Michael and Jin "Han" and "Chewie"? How did I miss something like that?

What was in Sawyer's shirt that freaked Michael out? The gun, presumably?

1And speaking of the Darwin Awards, I probably shouldn't be laughing about this, but you have to admit, it's hilarious.

Watched the last of Wonderfalls. Hilarious, charming, and clever, but I think I can see why it got cancelled. While in its short run it stayed fresh and inventive, I could see it getting repetitive rather quickly. Boo to Fox, hearts to Tim Minear, and uncontrollable giggles to Jewel Staite.

Why is it that all our Big Damn Actors are evil in their later Whedon and Minear incarnations? A misogynistic preacher serving as the right-hand man of the First Evil, an evil goddess that robs the world of free will and is responsible for the horrors of Connor/Cordy, the manifestation of the Senior Partners, and the Wicked Wife of the West. Go figure. And at least they had sufficient prior notice of cancellation in order to wrap everything satisfactorily. Didn't Angel only have five episodes' notice?

Anyway, Brenna: I've been using the "official" BitTorrent client, and recently BlogTorrent, because it set itself as default and I see no compelling reason to expend the effort to switch back. Using BitTorrent is easy. Download a client, then go to a site that has offers torrents, like those you listed. Click/open the torrent file. The file transfer should start automatically. Email me if you have any problems. Priscellie at gmail.

*snorks* You know how I spent most of yesterday on my Animation homework? It turns out I misread the assignment and accidentally did three weeks' worth of work. And to think, at Penn, I would have considered this a "light" assignment. (Of course, that might be because my professor was crazy).

I'm really going to have to work on my communication skills.

Oh. So that's why I haven't heard anything regarding the assignment of my Peer Advisees over in a month. They've already been assigned, and somehow my name as an advisor was lost in the shuffle. That's obnoxious. I hope it's not too late for them to fix their mistake.

If Spike has seen The Nightmare Before Christmas, I'm willing to bet he's read Harry Potter. The sentimental sap in me wants to imagine that he and Dawn read it together in the summer after Buffy died.

And I need to stop reading fluff.

Rented Wonderfalls on a whim when out for dinner, was immediately sucked in, and watched the first six episodes in one sitting. I would have watched more, but I wanted to save some for tomorrow, given that there are only 13 episodes. WHY WAS THIS SHOW CANCELLED? What is it about Tim Minear that turns TV execs into gibbering morons?

FIVE DAYS, TEN HOURS.

Got together with Chungy, Eunice, and Mein Schlienen last night. Originally we were all going to Chungy's for dinner, as her mom had offered to make us authentic Korean cuisine, but she'd had a long day, so we didn't want to impose. Instead, we had dinner at Chili's for old times' sake, got gelato at Paciugo, then returned to my house to watch an anime called Appleseed and some Firefly. Appleseed was gorgeous -- I think I missed half the dialogue just admiring the blend of CG and traditional 2D animation.

Firefly was interesting, as Chungy had somehow gotten it into her head that there was a lot of teen angst-type drama on the show. I wanted to make her rewatch the episodes she'd seen ("Serenity", "The Train Job", "Our Mrs Reynolds", and "Jaynestown"), because I don't have the foggiest clue how she could misremembered so severely, but as Marcelina had been with us when we watched those four episodes, I didn't want to make her rewatch an episode for Chungy's sake when she was already so excited about the show. Instead, we watched "Ariel", which I felt had a good representation of the Firefly dynamic, without necessarily requiring a lot of backstory for Eunice's sake (who hadn't seen any).

After that, everyone went home, and I vowed to fix Chungy's bizarre misconception through excessive consumption of Whedon-y goodness. I only wish that we'd been able to convert her earlier, so that she could have seen Serenity with us. Oh well, I sincerely doubt that the May 26th screenings will be the last ones, so it's probably not too late.

(Oh, and Rachel -- Marcelina agrees with me that Cherise would make a much better Zoe, if only for the hair. Hah!)

Responses to Comments:

Tori: I loves you back!

Schlien: Oh, I agree that Jin was always attractive. The man is gorgeous. But in this episode it was like WOAH HOLD ME BACK.

Allison: I adore my shallow, self-absorbed, ridiculous, stupid blondes. My love for movie!Zaphod (only because his hair color is not book-canon), Glory, Harmony, and Galinda (to name a few) knows no bounds. But those characters had the force of personality to back up their ego. Shannon is shallow, self-absorbed, ridiculous, and an introvert. And while she had no difficulty translating Danielle's message (spoken quite rapidly -- I couldn't keep up and I've had years of French), she had trouble translating "azur infinie" to "blue infinity" when it was written out on paper. Useless. And regardless of how much I dislike the pairing, I think that being with Sayid is probably the last thing she needs right now. Now that Boone is gone, she finally has the opportunity to learn to fend for herself and not be completely reliant on others. I hope Sayid recognizes this and doesn't let her just transfer all her needyness from Boone onto him.

Renata: Every time my friends get together to watch Eddie Izzard, I somehow always have somewhere else I need to be. I've seen short snippets of his routines, and I think he's quite possibly one of the funniest people on the planet, so I must now give up on the notion of watching the DVDs with my friends and just go out and rent them myself. :D

Meghan: Fabulous! Do you know where I can download any Veronica Mars episodes?

Keith: Mostly it was about his reaction to the gay marriages in California last year. I found his remarks at best short-sighted and insensitive, and at worst downright offensive.

Beth: Alan Tudyk in a nun's habit? Bwahaha, YES. And something tells me he could SO pull it off.

Meghan again: Alan Tudyk suspended from the ceiling in a glittery thong/leotard in Spamalot? I am so afraid. For some reason, I'm getting visions of Alan as Rocky, singing "The Sword of Damocles." And it doesn't help my mental images to know that Anthony Head has actually played Frank.

So today marks the one-year anniversary of Not Fade Away, the series finale of Angel. It's also the one-year anniversary of me being a Buffy fan, as Cyth showed me the first two episodes the night NFA aired. In honor of this day, I've been rewatching Angel season 5, and DEAR GOD I LOVE THIS SHOW. I'd like to know what on earth was going through those execs' heads, if anything at all. But I'm in an excellent mood right now and not feeling particularly bitter.

Here's to Joss for 12 fantastic seasons of TV! As you can see from the state of the fandom, Buffy and Angel are most definitely not fading away.

You know what bothers me? Seeing a "SPOILER WARNING!" on someone's episode review and not knowing if it's spoilers for that night's episode or spoilers for future episodes. So to make things abundantly clear:

SPOILERS FOR TONIGHT'S LOST, BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE A WUSS.

Okay, first off, how did I magically intuit that Sawyer's name was James? I don't read fanfic, so it's not some fanon speculation deal... Trippy. Maybe it's a "steamrolled Harry Potter" thing.

Jack, silly boy, Rule 735,862 of Television states that you cannot make references to things that are referenced in Monty Python without suffering severe silliness casualties. Suggesting that Sawyer was a lumberjack back on Earth-That-Was will automatically trigger the entire audience to imagine him in women's clothing, hanging around in bars. While we appreciate the shirtless Sawyer fanservice, I'm not sure if we'd feel the same about seeing him wearing high heels, suspenders, and a bra.

Anyway, was it just me, or was Daniel Dae Kim unusually attractive tonight? That last series of close ups that switched between him and Sun? GUH.

Did anyone recognize the Insensitive American "Memoirs of a Geisha" Woman? She looked oddly familiar.

Oh, and Locke was so checking Danielle out.

Things that are awesome: Hurley, Jin/Sun (EEEEE!!!), Artz's "Herm-own-ninny" moment, Walt and Vincent *sob*, Charlie's "message in a bottle" (And Charlie opening Hurley's note just after he said not to read it? SO CHARLIE. *loves*)

Things that are not cool: Shannon, Shannon, and more Shannon. I don't care if you've "changed" since then. I still find you intolerable.

Teaser: Charlie! Sayid! Turnip Head! Wah!

The book meme! Renata tagged me, so I figured I might as well do it.

1) Total number of books owned?
After performing a rough survey of the books in my room, I think the number is around 250-300.

2) The last book I bought?
Mirrormask Illustrated Film Script, Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean

3) The last book I read?
I'm currently reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, by Susanna Clarke

4) Five books that mean a lot to me? (in no particular order)
The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster -- after over a decade, still one of my favourite books
Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card -- my first significant example of a book I loved that I later couldn't stomach because of the sociopolitical views of the author.
The Animorphs and Harry Potter series -- for how the fandoms contributed to who I am today
Men at Arms, Terry Pratchett -- still idly toying around with musical ideas, even though I've mostly given up
My little black book I carry around with me all the time -- for obvious reasons

5) Tag 5 people and have them fill this out:
Umm... are there any of you out there that haven't filled it out yet? I've long since lost track.

Casting info for X3: Frasier's Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut, and Lost's Maggie Grace as Kitty Pryde. I love how they've recast Kitty for each movie. And how Maggie is nowhere near the age or appearance of the girls that played Kitty in the previous two movies.

Ooh! I check my flist once more before bed, and what do I find? Covers for the third Serenity comic! And they're every bit as funny as I expected them to be, given the first six. River's isn't so humorous -- it just has a very "I *hart* Adobe Illustrator kthxbye!!1"-type vibe. And I do find it funny how obviously it was referenced from what is probably the most widely-used promo shot of River. Wash's I can't wait to caption. (Oh, I hope it's the next subject of Caption Tightpants on FFF.n!) It looks like poster art for "The Sound of Music: In Space!"1 And the idea of Simon with a huge gun makes me snerk mightily. Look at that arm! Look at those muscles! He's a doctor, yet it looks like his head has been pasted on the body of... I don't know, Gaston? And he's dressed like a Ren Faire reject. He looks like he should have a ponytail for some reason. Silly boy.

1 "The Sound of Music: In Space". Maybe "The Sound of Music: 3000" would sound better, as there is no sound in space, and therefore no sound of music. Of course, the events of Firefly happen in [I don't have the patience to look up the date], and you KNOW that in "The Sound of Music: In Space" they fight Space Nazis, so I'm going with that.

And now I'm going to bed. May visions of shirtless Sean Maher dance in my head!

I dare you to come up with something cooler at this moment.

AAARGH again. I went to double-check the UTD website to make sure that my second class had not been cancelled before beginning the rush-hour trek to the school, and I found that while it lists my second class as "open", it still lists the first class as "open", too! And it still appears on my student schedule! Rrgh, useless.

NOT COOL. They cancelled the Intermediate 3D Modeling/Animation course. And of course, they never phoned or emailed me about the cancellation, so I wasted an hour and a half of my afternoon driving over to UTD and back. The Advanced course this evening is still in place, however, so I'll still have something animation-related this summer, but it starts at 6PM, and because of traffic at that hour, I'd probably have to leave at 4. It's just under 30 minutes without traffic, and now I'm going to be going up during rush hour. Rrgh, hulk smash!

In my sleeplessness, via Whedonesque: a sneak peek at the Serenity comic (takes place between "Objects in Space" and the movie).

The dialogue really hits home how much I love Nathan Fillion. It feels so awkward and flat on the page, but then you imagine Nathan's voice behind it, and the life-force is renewed! Well, it's that way for all the characters, but it seemed more significant with Mal. I don't know, my brain is fuzzing out. Back to bed for me.

Beth makes some excellent points about the stupidity of the MPAA in her LJ. In that same vein, in a deliberate gesture of snook cocking, does anyone know where I can find episodes of Veronica Mars and the new Dr. Who for download?

(I would like to take this opportunity to again declare my love for the phrase "cock a snook". If I were to compile a list of the Best Phrases Ever, it would definitely be near the top. So useful, so economical, so vuagely dirty-sounding yet in reality so innocent!)

And unrelated, but this Metaquote makes me laugh a lot.

Has anyone made an icon with Anakin/Vader that says "Sith Happens"? Because if not, I totally disown fandom for having FAILED.

In other news, Mein Schlienen, do you want to dress up for Serenity? Rachel is going as River and Cherise is waffling between Zoe and Inara (I'm pushing for the former, Rachel the latter). I was thinking I'd be Kaylee, as no one needs two Rivers (and I always feel kind of odd lusting over Simon when dressed as his sister), but then I figured if you wanted to dress up as well, you'd make an adorable Kaylee. Or you would make a fantastic Saffron, or even Jayne should you desire. (It is, after all, a girl's name.) I love all my Firefly women, and I'll gladly take whoever's left.

Melissa (my newly-graduated older sister) stopped by this evening to watch TV and munch on leftovers from last night's festivities. We watched "Arsenic and Old Lace" together, which is one of my favourite plays. Yay for Turner Classic Movies! It entertains me that the love interest is played by an actress named Priscilla Lane, when I was named after a woman named Priscilla Lane. Not the same person, obviously, but still. We Priscillas are a rare breed.

Anyway, this had me in a ridiculous gigglefit. A re-dubbed version of the "Frodo Awakens" scene, ganked from Indy. Puts me in the mind of the hilarious Wizard People, Dear Reader, which will be screened at my house this summer, mark my words. Ikkle seniors, when would be a good time to get together?

Serenity in 11 days! *bounces*

And OH MY GOSH, there needs to be a screening of "Wizard People" at "The Witching Hour"! Dear lord, that would be hilarious...

A highly amusing comment on the MPAA's asshattery this morning.

And more articles linked from Indy, plus a few link recs to try to make up for the loss of BTfenet.

*RAGE* MPAA Targets Six BitTorrent TV Sites. You UNBELIEVABLY STUPID PEOPLE! There is NO HARM WHATSOEVER in pirating TV! It solidifies your audience and serves as an excellent tool for bringing new fans in, or catching up already-converted fans when they miss an episode! You lose NO REVENUE until you bring the DVDs of the show out, and in that case, if fans were going to buy the DVDs to begin with, most likely they will still buy the DVDs regarless of whether they have all the episodes burned on CD. Piracy for TV only increases the number of fans likely to purchase DVDs! We think the commentary tracks and higher video/audio quality and deleted scenes and featurettes are worth it! I have all of Buffy Season 7 burned on CD, but I still bought the DVDs, and all my experience in the fandom indicates that I'm in the definite majority on this issue. I still plan of buying the Lost DVDs, even though I have nearly the entire series in HDTV-quality! We want to support the shows we love, and we'd like it if the studios would HELP us spread the love, rather than trying to LIMIT THE FRICKIN' FANBASE. And plus, according to current laws, while legally in a grey area, it's NOT TECHNICALLY ILLEGAL.

In the article, they say: There are thousands of people in the entertainment industry who are working to develop, produce, and promote television shows. Those shows and those jobs are worth protecting. Show me ONE PERSON in the entertainment industry who will lose his/her job because of piracy. Tell me ONE WAY that TV piracy can cause harm, and I'll shut up.
  • There's no advertising revenue lost, because the number of people that would watch the show as it aired on TV does not change. People still like to watch shows as they air. And because you're drawing in new fans, your advertising revenue can only increase!
  • There's little chance DVD sales will go down, because generally, those that would have bought DVDs in the first place will still buy DVDs. And because you're increasing the fanbase, you have a wider market of potential DVD buyers.
  • With serial shows like Lost with plotlines and story arcs that extend over many episodes, piracy allows us to revisit past episodes and increases fan speculation, which is much of the core of fandom!
  • A lot of fans rely on piracy, as many don't have TiVO or VCRs, and many have conflicts that prohibit them from watching the show when it airs. Trying to eliminate piracy alienates a HUGE portion of the fanbase.
  • DVDs don't come out for months after the show finishes each season, often longer if the show is less successful. I've brought my Lost CDs to slumber parties and introduced a huge bunch of friends to the show, several of which are regular watchers now. Without piracy, how are fans supposed to spread the love in an age where the VCR is no longer as popular?
  • Sites like BTEFnet.net are set up in a way that discourages library-building, which was the main sticking point on the Betamax decision. The website is set up with the clear intention of allowing fans to catch up on recent episodes. After an episode has been available for a few weeks, it is taken down. Episodes are long gone by the time the DVDs come out.

Piracy is THE REASON Firefly got its second first chance. Piracy allowed me to catch up on the Lost episodes I missed before my friends convinced me to watch the show.

STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID IDIOT MORONS! *RAGES*

And man, couldn't they have waited TWO WEEKS for Lost to be over?

    Serenity: TWO WEEKS! EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Teeth: Pretty good, but I think something isn't healing properly. I'm scheduling a checkup for tomorrow morning.

Sleep: Why do I want to go to sleep at 9:30? Probably because I woke up at 5:30 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep because of my nap yesterday. Silly biological clock! Doesn't it know that it doesn't have to keep ridiculous hours anymore?

Classes: My summer class schedule shifted about, giving me two back-to-back four-hour classes on Tuesdays, with a one-hour dinner break at 5. Mommy? Oh well, I have two weeks to decide if I'm going to drop one, and the 9-hour block certainly saves driving time. And I won't miss any Lost, which is nice. Durr.

I wrote a rather long, tetchy post about last night's Lost episode, but I realized in the morning that it wasn't the show in general I was irked at, it was the uselessness of Kate. But it's always nice to vent, so I'm still posting (albeit in a wee tiny font), in all its rambling, unedited glory.
Lost. Feh, another Kate episode. Good thing we have Charlie/Claire to make it worthwhile! Ikkle TurnipHead, lulled to rest by the soothing tones of Driveshaft... Domestic haircutting bliss... an invite to live with him in LA... Only non-lame part of the entire episode! *does the ovary dance*

But I'm getting seriously tired of the "Something went wrong on the island! Let us each accuse someone else of wrongdoing! Let some random character figure out what happened, let him/her confront the other, and let no one else find out!"-pattern of storytelling. YAWN CITY. It feels like a show in its 4th season. Hurley is right, it's impossible to keep track of who knows what. It's getting ridiculous.

I'm sick of episodes that will have little to no impact on the events of the future. I want character interactions and plot developments to mean something. I'm getting bored by all these secrets flying about -- can we try nailing something down? The sheer multitude of secrets takes the novelty and intrigue away from the Big Questions. And in fact, what ARE the Big Questions now? We haven't heard from LostZilla in some eight episodes (not counting the ridiculous recapfest), and that wasn't even real LostZilla, it was a part of Boone's twisted visionquest. Will the hatch be opened, and what's inside? Frankly, that plotline has been drawn out past the point of me caring anymore. Is Claire's baby teh ebil? Given that the only thing that can quiet its cries is Sawyer's voice, I'm thinking yeah.

I was trying to explain the main plot points to my mom last night, and I felt like a moron because there's just so much that's been left deliberately obscured. I feel a lot like Hurley right now. "All I want is some friggin' answers!," I shout. Not because I'm curious or because I find the mysteries intriguing. Because I'm fed up. It's not getting exciting, it's getting tiresome.

Is Michael ever going to find out who poisoned him? Is Kate going to just keep feeling sorry for herself, even though she could stop all the accusatory stares by just taking five minutes to explain why she was wanted by the law? "Do you really think I'm capable of [poisoning Michael]?" she asks. Well DUH, of course he thinks you're capable of it! NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE HECK YOU DID. Until you come clean with your history, no one is going to have any idea of what you're capable of! You could make it so much easier for yourself, but NOOOOO, you and Sawyer just heap on the guilt. You invite people to punish and mistrust you, and you're offended and betrayed when they do. GET OVER YOURSELF.

And I'm getting tired of the whole "Oh no, at the end of this episode starring me, everyone shuns me and judges me, but by the next episode, I'm back in the bosom again, and I'm shunning and judging whoever's next up." The only characters I can stand nowadays are Hurley, Sayid, and those like Charlie and Claire that don't have enough screentime to incur my wrath.

Maybe I just wasn't cut out for serial TV. Smallville isn't even fun to mock anymore.
Here endeth the useless ranting. Feel free to forget and/or ignore most of what you just read. Anyway, this makes me feel a lot better, so hurrah.

Side note: I love that when Jin and Sun speak Korean, they speak Korean. That will never stop being cool. It's kind of weird in comparison when Sayid and the HoSuBoYay gang all speak English to each other, but it's okay, because I highly doubt Naveen Andrews knows Arabic, being Indian and all.

Stupid Kate. I hope LostZilla eats her. Or she could drown, that would be fun! Or get mobbed by a pack of flesh-eating weasels.

Booyeah! C+ in Networked Life, the class I tanked both exams in! (One taken while still recovering from Horrific Flu From Hell, the other taken at the pinnacle of Hell Week Fortnight Month.) Huzzah for extra credit and excellent homework grades to serve as compensation! In order to balance my exam grades, I must have rocked the socks off of my final project! I only wish I'd been able to attend more of the extra credit lectures. I might have scraped by with a B-.

*dances the merry "I didn't fail the 100-level computer science course I'd intended to take as an easy-A" jig*

Yes, I fully realize I am horrifically lame. I care not.

Now the only class I don't know about is Animation. Not sure if Josh is going to take points off for the number of extensions I needed, but he appeared to really like my animations, so yay. And I got solid As on everything else I turned in, so I've got that going for me.

Wisdom teeth update: OW OW OW OW OW

I think I'm going to relax and work from my bed. Now that I have a 20-foot ethernet cord that I accidently stole from Rebecca at our last meeting, I'll be able to stretch that far!

And brilliant, fantastic, unbelievable, phenomenal news: I'm getting a new computer! Tony Nominations Announced. Man, I need to see Spamalot.

In other news, our house is getting re-roofed today. Every so often, massive chunks of roofing material come cascading down the side of our house and make very loud crashing noises upon impact with the ground. It's kind of fun, in a "I don't dare set foot outside my home for fear of certain death by decapitation" sort of way.

Naveen Andrews cast in ABC's The Ten Commandments. He's slated to play Menerith.

Looking over IMDB, I believe that this is only the second time he's been cast as an Arab. It's kind of funny. But it makes me curious: do people ever get offended when an actor of one nationality gets cast to play a character of different nationality? I'm sure some do; I don't think there's an issue in the world that someone doesn't find offensive. But oh well.

Anyway, I've made some updates to my Summer Book/TV/Movie Guide. Thanks for the recs, Renata! The books you mentioned sound quite awesome. Onwards, to the library!

The morning after, I'm munching scrambled eggs like a pro! I've chosen to stop taking the perscription painkillers and graduate to Motrin. My jaw is still a bit sore and it aches a tad if I open it too far, but overall, life is good. My grades are starting to come in, and I have an A for the "Lady in the Dark" project, an A- for "Copyright and Culture", and I predict an A or A- for "Virtual World Design". I predict a C for "Networked Life" due to my performance on the exams, which will hopefully be offset by the extra credit I submitted and my strong work on the homeworks and final project. I'm not sure what to expect for Animation, but I'd imagine somewhere in the high B or low A range. I've gotten solid As on everything else I've submitted, but the lateness of my final project might cost me.

Just crossed one movie off my Summer Guide: the original Willy Wonka, with Gene Wilder. I can't wait to see what Tim Burton and Johnny Depp do with it! Gene Wilder already had that creepy edge, and I look forward to seeing Johnny Depp pulling out all the stops. I imagine the trained squirrels alone will be worth the price of admission! And it'll be heartwarming to have another entire generation traumatized by Oompa Loompas. :D

Meanwhile, so the line "Button, button... who's got the button?" is from Roald Dahl? Somehow, Spike quoting "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is even better than quoting Monty Python! *surfs about* Oh. Nevermind, it came before Dahl. Long before, in fact. Rats. Still, quite entertaining for those five precious, deluded minutes.

Ashley -- the doctor's name is Arlet Dunsworth, and he came highly recommended. I certainly have no complaints! I'm feeling great. His office is right above Sevy's, at the periphery of Preston Center. And if you have to get yours done this summer, act quickly. His schedule tends to fill up far in advance.

Bravo! Via TLC, A comma has been inserted into the new GoF teaser poster! If only a similar alteration had been made by the promoters of "Two Weeks Notice"! I was at the point where if it hadn't been changed by this week, I would have photomanipped it myself for my own sanity. I'm actually not the much of a grammar nazi usually, but for some reason, this majorly irked me.

In other news, I'm feeling fabulous now. I'm healing rapidly, if the amount of blood on the gauze is any indicator, and I'm in no pain. I don't think I'm quite ready for solid foods (or "almost solid" my fellow Zdob si Zdub friends might joke), but I don't doubt that tomorrow I'll be macaroni-ing and mashed potato-ing with the best of 'em. All the numbness is gone, and I've been yapping up a storm to try to get the stiffness out of my jaw, as it doesn't hurt to talk anymore. I spent quite some time talking to Mom about Star Wars and Firefly and Cyth's comments about the use of props in Lost's "Whatever the Case May Be" versus Firefly's "War Stories", and just how astonishingly well-written Firefly was. I really wish she'd posted her thoughts in her LJ, as she came up with some really intriguing points.

I also talked about how Firefly brought the concept of a "used future" to a new level, and how disappointing it was that George Lucas seems to have left it by the wayside, favoring the shinier, more immaculate look preferred by shows like "Star Trek". It's especially disappointing, as George Lucas' original trilogy was one of the main driving forces behind bringing the concept of the "used future" into the popular consciousness.

It's so wonderful to just be able to talk, without having to worry about not getting work done. It still hasn't sunk in that I'm free for the summer, and that I no longer have five massive projects hovering over my head. And now, I'm off to watch the Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka. Huzzah! I have time to see movies again!

I put together a guide of movies, TV shows, and books I want to take in over the summer. It's mostly meant to be for my own reference, but on the offchance that you guys are interested (as many of you have similar cinematic and literary interests), I figured I might as well post it. Here's the link!

I'm now totally redoing my "Who's Who" and "What's What" sections of my blog, as they haven't been updated in two and a half years, and I'm brainstorming for a new layout.

Just to test the waters, what layout theme would you most like to see? I'm leaning towards Firefly/Serenity for obvious reasons, but I might want to save it for September. On the other hand, I've been considering a Gorey layout for some time, and I've been tossing around some other ideas for other fandoms I enjoy. Note that I'm not necessarily going to go with whatever gets the most votes, but it's still a fun way to get reader input.

    CoL Layout Poll
What layout theme would you most like to see for CoL?
    Firefly/Serenity
    Classic Star Wars trilogy
    Edward Gorey
    Calvin and Hobbes?
    Sandman?
    Bat Boy?
Something else? (write in the Comments)

It's so surreal. For some unknown reason, my taste buds aren't working properly together, and so whenever I eat or drink anything, I taste different flavors on different parts of my tongue. It's like a fragmentation of my sense of taste. Trippy.

In other news, virtually all the numbness has worn off, so I can speak clearly again, even though I try to put a limit on my word count for fear of slowing the healing process. Also, a I can actually feel it now when I poke myself in the chin! The chin numbness gave me at least 15 minutes' worth of entertainment this morning.

Flans: Check out Browncoat Jacqueline Passey's blog for details. She has a listing with links to the theatres and whether or not there are still tickets available. And here's the official website for the advance screenings, CantStopTheSignal.com. It still says May 5th, but it's really the 26th, of course.

I look forward to when Universal decides to expand beyond the US borders. I know Flans all across the world that are itching to see this movie, and I hope they get the chance.

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

I AM SEEING SERENITY IN 17 DAYS!!!!!

Rachel just woke me up from my merry drug-induced haze to tell me that she had somehow acquired Serenity tickets for May 26th. You have no idea how funny it is to try to squee and gush like a madwoman with a completely numb jaw.

I dreamed that I was able to eat tortilla soup by this evening. That's funny, because I'm still incapable of enunciating consonants. I could barely even swallow liquids after the surgery. But I'm in no pain at all, so drugs = yay! The doctor told me that the wisdom teeth came out very easily, and that he predicted I would bounce back in no time. I feel really well-rested, and I think that instead of sleeping, I'm going to kick back and relax and watch some movies.

After poring over the web, I finally found the thread that announced it. A post from Joss on the Browncoats board. Dallas is one of the 20 cities where there will be screenings! And apparently Rachel managed to get tickets before they were technically on sale, so go her! Gah, I love this woman. I don't know what I would have done if I'd missed through this opportunity!

    EEEEEE, I'M SEEING SERENITY!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now mouth hurts from talking, so to any of my friends: If you want to talk to me today, please email me, or tell me to get on AIM. I don't think I'm doing the healing process any good by trying to speak.

Weird fandom crossover ships in my dream last night: Buffy/Sayid. Yeah, I don't get it either. Sayid wrote this cryptic poem that when deciphered would guide a huge number of Iraqi refugees to me (Buffy) for safety. I had to protect them against an army of undead, demons, and Iraqi government officials.

And I'm not even on painkillers yet.

Oh -- hope everyone had a good Octo de Mayo! (Sorry for the confusion earlier with that whole "Ocho" thing. Brain spaz!)

    And the Backstory:

In Lower School one year, Cinco de Mayo came on a weekend. Therefore, the Spanish class held their festivities on the 8th of May rather than the 5th. Because we French students had a tenuous grasp of basic Spanish language concepts at best, we started joking about an "Octo de Mayo" celebration. The Spanish students stared blankly. It was great!

I'm home! I got two hours of sleep last night, three hours on the airplane, enjoyed a lovely Mother's Day brunch with my family, then took a three hour nap. I'm well on my way to catching up on my Zs! We had dinner at Jack's, home of the most unbelievably delicious hamburgers in the universe, then mom and I watched (insert name of close friend)'s (insert name of close relation) on Desperate Housewives. (Haha, Felicia is Eve 6!) I was quite vexed to make the connection that I'm taking a summer course Wednesday evenings, which would conflict with Lost, but then of course, it would just be the season finale that I'd miss before it goes into summer reruns, and we can easily tape it. Anyway, there go my plans to have a big season finale party amongst all of my Lost fan friends!

And now I'm returning to Dreamland before undergoing oral surgery tomorrow morning. Stupid wisdom teeth.

11:30 and I'm just about ready to burn to CD. Yeah, I definitely missed my plane. Forgot to eat dinner, though, and nothing to eat in the dorm... Philly Diner, here I come. Ah, Philly Diner! Like Denny's, but with slower service. But they're the only place I know of on campus that serves stuff like that, and every so often you want eggs benedict at 3AM or get homesick for Chicken Fried Steak after living so long in Philadelphia, and their milkshakes aren't half bad.

No, overall I'm fairly pleased, especially considering that nearly all animation was done in a span of 36 hours. I would not recommend this to anyone. Let's just say it was a learning experience.

Watch as Priscilla RACES AGAINST THE CLOCK! The rat walk cycle is completely done, and I'm a little more than halfway through with the rendering the final scene of "Little Old Lady Land". It's split up over 12 computers. :D Will I make my 4:00 flight? Not a chance in hell. But still I race!

And come to think of it, I haven't eaten yet today. Stupid biological necessities.

    Can it happen before 4PM?
-- Finish the Maya render: 1 hr? (If I take over the Mac lab downstairs and the computers in Meyerson, this can be significantly diminished?)
-- Render the full movie in AfterEffects: 1 hr
-- While rendering in AE, run to bookstore, resell textbooks and buy blank CD, then return rogue library book: 0 min
-- Burn everything to CD, turn in to professor's mailbox: <10 min
-- Return to room (10 min), grab all bags, hobble to the street, and flag a cab (10-15 min)
-- Go to airport (20-30 min)
-- Be there at least 30 minutes in advance.

Time it would have to be right now in order to be able to make my flight: About 12:40.
    Time it is now: 2:20.

This is why one must NEVER SLEEP. If I'd managed to miraculously pull off another all-nighter, I'd be going home today. But no, I am weak. I intended to take a one-hour nap, but I didn't hear my alarm, and the "nap" ended up being four hours. I just called my mom, who is now changing my airline reservation for me to a 6AM flight tomorrow morning, as there are no later flights today. This will be interesting, as both my alarm clocks are now in storage, as are my sheets and pillow. Maybe someone will lend me a towel. Good thing I hadn't checked out of my room yet. And at least with a 6AM flight, I'll still be able to be on time for any Mother's Day festivities that I may have accidentally mentioned to said mother in said phone conversation, that she may or may not have been supposed to know about. Um... at least I'll actually have time to find a card now!

And now I'm off, in a valiant quest for food!

New teaser poster for GoF, courtesy of Leaky. The lack of comma is going to drive me nuts.

Got an A on my Copyright final project, giving me an A- for my final grade. Takes the sting out of my inevitable failure in my Networked Life class.

Oh. The exam started at 11.

I think that's about all that needs to be said about my morning. Except how it doesn't even scratch the surface of everything that's gone wrong today.

Okay, I got a couple hours' sleep and I'm feeling much better about the world. My paper is going smoothly, I figured out how to import my data into Excel and make a histogram graph (tonight marks the first time I even opened the program), I can actually read full sentences again, and I might actually have time to feed myself lunch today! I'm wearing my "My Universe is Pain and Emptiness" shirt to cock a snook at the world.

I'll just head for the animation lab as soon as my exam is over, animate my little tush off, re-time stuff in AfterEffects while the last two shots are rendering, put it all together, export for DV and for web (one so I don't fail and the other so you guys can enjoy the reason I have bags under my eyes manufactured by Zero Halliburton), pray that it'll be small enough to FTP to myself, burn to CD, turn in, then pack like a madwoman.

As for packing, I think it's going to go relatively quickly. Ko is long gone, so I don't have to worry about mixing up our stuff, and I have the entire room to lay out all my posessions into "ship", "store", and "sgo in my bags I bring with me to the airport" heaps.

One more all-nighter cannot kill me, and will instead make me stronger. That is, unless I zone out at the airport tomorrow and get run over by a trolley. I can sleep on the airplane. Last Wednesday's episode of "Lost" can wait, as I learned from past experience that watching "Lost" while on a plane is a terrible idea. When I was coming home for Christmas holidays, I tried watching the pilot, and the INSTANT the plane on TV experienced its first lurch of the inevitable crash, my plane started experiencing turbulence. I have experienced few things in my humble 20 years I found freakier. And I just used the word "experienced" three times, but I am past the point of caring. My inner thesaurus is already on summer break, and soon I will be, too.

    MAKE IT BE OVER.

I keep trying to push on, but my brain decided two days ago that it was finished and it now refuses to pull its weight. I've written about four sentences in the past two hours. I try to read over snippets from the course texts, and by the time I get to the end of the sentence I can't remember what the beginning was. I feel like no matter what I cover in my paper, I'm undoubtedly going to have somehow missed whatever boat our professor had in mind. I'm not even approaching ready for tomorrow's exam. There's too much material to cover, and I've been spending all my time scrambling to complete stuff for my other classes... I'm going to completely bomb this exam, just like I failed the midterm (though admittedly, it was a "high" F, to quote Mrs. Krabappel), and when dear god WHEN am I going to have time to finish my animation?

Come on, brain. The more you cooperate, the more likely you are to see sleep at some point.

Edit: Okay, threw together my extra credit paper.

Further edit: "gross of cliques" is the most bizarre phrase I can recall using in a paper.

*facepalms* I was working on Star Wars-inspired stuff most of yesterday, and I still managed to completely forget.

Belatedly, May the Fourth be with you.

Whew! Just got back from my Virtual World Design presentation, which went swimmingly. Ari and David are programming gods. That is, they are gods of programming, rather than somehow engaging in the act of coding the inner workings of deities. And my artwork and animation went over well, so yay. And I figured out how to compress movies in AfterEffects, so I'll definitely be able to upload my animation final project when it's done. One more project out of the way!

    Still To Do:
  • 10-page paper for Networked Life. Due tomorrow at noon.
  • Short paper 1-2 pages for (much needed) extra credit for Networked Life. Due tomorrow at noon.
  • MASSIVE CRAM SESSION and half a semester's worth of reading catch-up for Networked Life. Exam tomorrow at noon.
  • Finish animating "Little Old Lady Land," futz with timing of certain sequences in AfterEffects, as some of it came out much slower than I intended. Must be rendered, edited together, etc, before I leave Saturday afternoon.
  • Find time to PACK everything, as the storage company is coming Saturday morning.
  • Come up with something for Mothers Day.
  • Sleep?

    Curse you, deadline elves!

    Jane Austen Action Figures?

Meanwhile, back in Academia Land, I just reopened I file (for my Virtual World Design project, due tomorrow. Or rather, today) I last worked on two weeks ago. I entertain myself so easily. I set up a makeshift Star Wars crawl, and wrote up some silly dummy text to test it with. This is what I wrote (contains spoilers for Lost 1x20 "Do No Harm"):
    Episode XLII
    The Fangirl Menace

Fnar. The fontmatching isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough for me!

Angst has descended upon the fangirl community. There are another two weeks before the next episode of LOST. Locke is JESUS, Sayid is HOTNESS incarnate, and Claire has just given birth to the ANTICHRIST. If she doesn’t name him BOONE, she should call him ADAM. Or DAMIEN. Damien’s popular.

    Procrastination is awesome.
Fandom just makes the world better.

Hah! I knew I wasn't crazy! I stopped by the animation lab this evening to send myself a bunch of files, and I ran into another guy from my class who was also under the impression that the animation wasn't due until tomorrow. And my teacher didn't even email him about it, so he was shocked when I told him that everything was supposed to be due Tuesday. I wonder how many other students were under the same impression? After all, only three students turned in revised animations on Tuesday, and there are something like 16 people in the class.

Oh -- my socks were calf-length, with light blue, dark blue, dark red, grey, and white stripes. I think Chungy was right, if I remember my sock history. Rebecca gets points for tapping into the knowledge that the socks were acquired in her presence. Dad gets negative points, as I am quite meticulous about my hygeine, thank you very much, and I just did my laundry yesterday. So meh.

Hilarious: George W Bush: The Genius Behind the Stupidity

In real-life news, my animation professor told me that as long as I get it in before the 9th, he'll still grade it. Seeing as how I leave on the 7th and don't have the necessary software at home, and how I was originally planning on turning it in tomorrow on the 5th, this will not be a problem. I imagine he'll probably dock points, but oh well. What can you do?

Hopefully, I'll have my animation up on my website for download by Thursday afternoon. If not, Friday afternoon. If not, wait longer. :D

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHH. My animation professor is officially the most frustrating person on the planet. Last Thursday at our critique, he originally said that because he was leaving town Wednesday (tomorrow), he wanted everything in by Tuesday (today) at 9AM. Then he changed tacks and asked his TA what his schedule looked like, and he said that he wouldn't be able to get to anything until Friday. My professor then told us that we could turn our stuff in by Thursday at noon.

At least, that's what I so vividly remember. I just got an email from him asking why I didn't turn in my final project tape, as apparently it was still due this morning. I've emailed him back, explaining my story. There's no way I can be the only one with this misconception.

I'm particularly upset because if I'd understood that everything was to be due today, I would have had no problem whatsoever in having it done in time. However, because I thought it wasn't due until Thursday, I've been working on stuff for other classes, and I haven't worked on my animation since the day of our critique.

I don't get why my professor and I seem to have such a communication block. I feel like I can never fully grasp what he says in class, whether it's a technique that the entire class seems to have learned in lecture that I completely fail to recall, or stuff like this. I'm paying rapt attention in class, but sometimes it seems like it's in one ear and out the other.

"What we have is a failure to communicate," I suggest to myself, then am promptly shot.

Jimmy froze and I lost my blog entry. Umm... let's see what I can remember.

In the category of "*facepalm*-inducing Politics":

Ohio Abortion Ban Proposed, "This bill would create felony criminal charges against any provider who performs an abortion, even to save the life of the woman" and "This bill would prohibit women from going across state lines to get an abortion and do so much more."

Plus, Evolution on trial as Kansas debates Adam vs Darwin. (Link ganked from Will) Can we just get the jury together and have a big group screening of "Inherit the Wind" and be done with it? *hums* Once that reefer has been destroyed/we'll start on Darwin and Sigmund Freud..."

Which reminds me... those that haven't gotten a chance to see it can download "Reefer Madness" here, as it doesn't come out on DVD until September. It's utterly hilarious, and I'd recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor. And for those of you like me that think Showtime is pack of fools for having no plans for releasing a soundtrack, sign the petition here. Currently attempting to find fanmade boots of the movie soundtrack, as I am assured that the movie version is far better than the stage cast. (Plus, hey, Alan Cumming!) All attempts to extract the audio track myself have failed.

Edit: Ooh! Remembered the other link I posted! Ganked from Sam: Oxyrhynchus plays merry hob with Satanists; heavy metal groups dismayed. Hey, and as they discover new fragments of the Book of Revelations, I wonder if they'll find references to Ronnie Soak.

I think I may accidentally have been spoiled for something that happens in the Lost finale. If so: PLEASE DEAR GOD NO, LET NO HARM COME TO (INSERT CHARACTER'S NAME HERE)!!!

    Here's hoping I'm just mistaken.

In other news, my laptop hates me. I keep putting off a much-needed upgrade of my memory and RAM because I'm half convinced I should just bite the bullet and get a new computer. Aaargh, Jimmy. Did I doom you by naming you after a fictional character that is endearingly stupid? (If so, maybe I should have named my iPod "Illyria" after all. There's something refreshingly robust about a God-King. And I could have gotten her a blue case, and then the nice men in white coats could have come by and offered me free room and board in a nice, soft room and a lovely wardrobe of "huggy coats".)

    Yes.

Good Lord school needs to be over.
