A brief article on the politics of Joss, Firefly, and Serenity at the Daily Kos.

A great review from WaffleMovies.com.

Red Carpet Interviews with the cast (minus Gina). Watch the Nathan/Ron/Sean clip. I'm not going to give anything away, but trust me. Dear god, I love Nathan Fillion.

Firefly in stick figures

4/5 Stars on MSN

And it also has the highest "fresh" rating of an action film this year, according to RottenTomatoes.com!

Man! Why did the temperature have to drop so suddenly? I was planning on wearing my River dress to class! I guess I'll wear Kaylee, even though that's what I was planning on wearing tonight to the screening. I have a movieverse-eque long-sleeved shirt that would be warm enough, then I could unroll the pants. The Zoe outfit is just slightly too costumey to wear in real life.

Or of course, I could wear the River dress with a light jacket. It's long enough, and I've got my rockin' movie boots to keep my feet comfy. Or my super-long all-fandom all-awesome coat! Wow, I look like "if River starred in The Matrix, but didn't want to kill any cows for her outfit."

*pauses, looks over entry*

Wow. I'm blazing new trails in lameness. Still, EEEEEE! Movie!

SERENITY today! Also Mirrormask, if you're lucky enough to live in a city where it's being released!

Ebert and Roper give Serenity three stars and two thumbs up! Also, thanks to a deluge of positive reviews, we're now fresh at RottenTomatoes.com! The Dallas Morning News gives it an A- (Mirrormask, too!).

A good day for sci-fi fans!

TOMORROW! TOMORROW! I LOVE YA, TOMORROW! YOU'RE ONLY A DAY AWAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY *shatters window*

In 24 hours, the theatre's mockable slide presentation will give way to a series of trailers and Fanta ads, which will then give way to GENIUS. And the world will know what I and a few hundred other flans have been sitting on for FOUR MONTHS. INTO THE BLUE SERENITY. EEEEE.

Well, two seconds of James Marsters is better than nothing. :D

Amy (my advisor) sent out an email to the DMDers, asking if we'd like to give prospies a tour or even put one up for the night. I told her I'd love to, and I am now playing host to a girl that could just as well be three-years-ago me. She's giddy beyond the telling of it at the idea of DMD, and she's quite the Potter fan. DMDers are always the coolest. I hope she gets in! She'll be here October 13th and 14th.

Homorphus Charm:
homo": (Greek) the same + "morph": change shape [force a werewolf NOT to change] OR "homo": L. man + "morph": change shape [force werewolf into human shape]

Or, you know, if could be a charm to turn a werewolf gay.

Ah, the things I don't dare post on WIAN. :D

YESSSSSSS!!!!! I always suspected Jason Fox was a Firefly fan! Ko can attest to the fact that I just spend the last five minutes jumping around the room and squealing, until she kicked me out so she could watch Veronica Mars. Life is awesome.

In the first episode of Gilligan's Island, Gilligan and the Skipper build a raft out of bamboo, and they sail off in hopes of reaching Hawaii. They spend hours just floating around in the ocean, until their raft is attacked by a shark, which takes big bites out of the raft! They thwart the shark, but the raft comes apart. They eventually swim to land. Gilligan is toting a single bamboo pole--he has managed to "save the raft". By following a series of footprints (which they originally believe belong to headhunters), they eventually realize they are back on the same island.

And that's the plot of Lost 2x02. Now where's my Veronica Mars?

Typical. No more than a week after I decide to cave and buy the Firefly soundtrack online, Varese Sarabande announces that they're releasing it on CD November 8th, with at least 5 new tracks. Part of me is OMGSQUEEEEEE, part of me is CURSES, FOILED AGAIN!

And it's just mean of Whedonesque to taunt me, saying "Promo photos of Amy Acker on Alias", and then I see Rachel Nichols and think "It's Rebecca! Is this from an unaired episode of The Inside?" then realize I'm being dumb. Wah, I miss my prematurely cancelled Tim Minear shows!

Wow. Until now, I just thought it was a given that I would watch Veronica Mars, then download both it and Lost so I can watch Lost, burn both to CD, and send them to Chungy in England. But Ko is a recent VM convert, and she has dance rehearsal. I should probably just watch Lost, then Ko and I can watch VM together when it finishes downloading. Stupid rationality getting in the way of me watching the clearly superior show as it airs!

Plus, I think my flist has a lot more Lost fans than Veronica Mars, and navigation will be problematic. FINE, I'll watch Lost as it airs. I can wait a few more hours to learn who was at the door...

Meanwhile, Ann Larimer wins the internet.

And man, that was fast! Amazon says my Serenity soundtrack and Son of a Witch were delivered this morning! Overnight! I can't wait until 9AM, when the package center opens. I'll have just enough time to add the soundtrack to my iPod before heading off to Poli Sci class! And here, Amazon was predicting that it wouldn't arrive until October 13th because I selected "free shipping"!

Here's a highly amusing article chronicling This Week in the Life of the Average Firefly Flan, a positive review in The Onion's AV Club, and Serenity appears in today's strip of PVP.

Who wrote Adam Baldwin's narration for the Serenity: Inside thing, and can they never be allowed to write again? Man, I could have written something better.

Also, just because movies are highly anticipated, do they have to release so much footage in advance? It was like this with Hitchhiker's Guide, too! Feh.

Survey: So how many people are going to have icons of the Nathan/Morena "kiss" on their Livejournals tomorrow?

The Golden Headdesk Award goes to Mugglenet.

And a meme ganked from Indy: When you see this on your Friends List, quote Firefly.

I've been listening to the Sci-Fi Channel's Firefly marathon in the background as I do my homework, and as I read Indy's post, River said: "'Day' is a vestigial mode of time measurement. Based on solar cycles. Not applicable. (beat) I didn't get you anything."

Wisteria's Lost "Review in Screencaps" are back! 2x01: The Island of the Doomed Cabana/Mortuary.

Also, I figured out why the LJ text messaging thing wasn't working properly! Have a party! Beth has asked her flist to write her 128-character ficlets, which is humorous.

Also, I figured out the admittedly basic mathematical concept that has been bugging me for the past two lectures of my Mathematics of Computer Science class. I win at life! Now if only I'd figure out the rest of the big stuff in time for Tuesday, when the first homework is due, I'll be fine! *scribbes details of tomorrow's Office Hours on back of hand*. Also, I'd be happy if they'd stop using acronyms that already bear such significance in my brain. DFA isn't deterministic finite automata, it's Dean/Democracy for America! And NFA isn't non-deterministic finite automata, it's "Not Fade Away", the series finale of Angel! Stupid brain. *jabs it with a Q-tip*

Me: If this were your homework, would you cry?
Ko: Forget crying, I'd jump out the window. Or drop the class. Or not even sign up for the class in the first place.
Me: See, this is why you're smarter than me.

Finally, I post the pictures I've been promising for weeks!

My room, from the kitchen. See our lovely tapestry and the Wall of Sex!
My bed, under various lighting conditions.
My desk! Observe the Sandman images, my enormously thick Black Market Physics Textbook (bottom shelf, green with the yellow band), Charlie the laptop of gorgeousness, and all sorts of lovely and geekish books and DVDs. Also: mah awesome lamp!
The Door of Liberal Glee -- highlights: Philadelphia Weekly's "Vote Kerry or Burn in Hell", Republicans for Voldemort, and my "Bush is stupid, throw rocks at him". And a detail of Our Titles. "Disillusioned Rogue" was a description of Mal in the pamphlet they handed out at the Serenity screenings. "Cocking a snook" is the term for sticking your thumb to your nose and waggling your fingers at someone. "Specimen of eternal volubility" was the slur Oliver Ellsworth, one delegate at the Constitutional Convention, used to refer to Luther Martin, another delegate.
The Fridge -- "make your own damn dinner". Complete with my Fruit Stash (alas, near empty when this was taken), our Chocolate Stash, and my Kaylee umbrella. See also the "Shadow Government" poster from "America: The Book".
The "Get Fuzzy" Wall -- for Christmas last year, I gave Ko a day-to-day "Get Fuzzy" calendar. She's been saving the comics since the beginning of the summer and taping them to the storage closet door.
My in-progress wall, above my bed. See my "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" shirt, autographed by three principal actors of Spamalot, a bunch of Anne Taintor postcards, a half-dozen Serenity posters and adverts, and the Lost pullout from a TV Guide last year.
My poster wall, with Ko as living sculpture. Above: our line of Hero lobby miniposters! Below (L-R): Chumscrubber, Discworld: Family Values (autographed by Pterry), Hero, Star Wars Episode III: Who's Your Daddy?, Rent (the movie), The Incredibles, Moulin Rouge, Serenity.
The hole in our wall and Ko's amusing caption: "Wall: 1, Priscilla: 0. If she had just cleaned her room like I told her to, violence would not have been necessary. -Ko"

And Ko's room: One, Two, Three! See her computer's desktop: us with Terry Pratchett!

*squeals as fangirlishly as she can in spite of a sore throat*

Pictures from the Serenity premiere in LA! In addition to our BDH (including brunette!Alan, though no sign of Gina), we have Aly and Alexis (Willow and Wes--now married), Amy Acker (Fred), and CHRISTINA HENDRICKS. YOSAFBRIDGE WAS AT THE PREMIERE!

And oh my good gravy, the Getty ones are even better! Page one, fourth row, second image. Go there NOW. Sean Maher, I love you like a fat man loves hamburgers. Everyone is too adorable for words! Even Summer, whose dress looks like it was made out of a plastic garbage bag. Well, River is nothing if not resourceful. :D

And speaking of Whedoners, it occurred to me last Wednesday that one of the Michaels (we have six) in my Cinema Production class looks amusingly like a young David Boreanaz. A fellow Buffy fan in the class agrees! He even has the hair that goes straight up! I am so amused.

Boo! I've been trying to keep this cold from getting its claws in me, and I wake up to green mucus, a fuzzy brain, a realization that I've eaten all my fruit and soup, and an email that informs the building that there will be no hot water until noon (when I have my first class). This does not bode well for my day.

Oh, wait! Cantaloupe and bananas in the fridge! Score! And I have almond milk, so I don't have to worry about dairy thickening the phlegm.

I am further cheered by these links:

I just got back from the preview screening of Corpse Bride, which was AWESOME. Beyond awesome. Jaw-droppingly awesome. The characters were delightful, the music was fun, and everything that seemed cheesy in the trailer wasn't. In fact, my main criticism is that the stop-motion animation was TOO good, and I fear people will just assume it's CG. Looking back, I'm actually annoyed with how good the animation was. It didn't feel like stop-motion at all. Despite the subject matter, it's less of a younger brother to Nightmare Before Christmas, and more of a distant cousin. While totally charming in itself, it didn't have the charm I associate with stop-motion.

And I should just shut up and realize that this movie is not--nor did it ever claim to be--Nightmare Before Christmas, and not hold it to weird, arbitrary standards and get on with my life.

(Of course, in the same vein as "This movie is not Nightmare Before Christmas", I came in my Sally costume. They even gave me a copy of the CD for dressing up, so go me!)

Back to the movie. The music was fun, but as I was expecting more bizarre, quirky, simple songs in the style of Nightmare, I was slightly offput by the more showtune-y style. I have no problem with showtune-y, but the songs just didn't feel... what's the word? Burtonesque.

And reading over what I've written, I don't think I get to say anything else until I've had a good night's sleep and I can talk about something other than it's lack of Nightmare-osity. The movie is EXCELLENT, and it deserves more than that. So it's back to Psych homework for me until I can learn to behave myself in polite company.

Is it really, really sad that in the first preview track of the Firefly soundtrack I listened to, I noticed that one of the instruments was missing in comparison with the televised version? Of course, in my defense, it was a pretty prominent instrument, but still. Geek! Unclean!

I'm so sick of Fox still treating Firefly like some redheaded bastard stepchild. Thousands of us have begged and pleaded for months, nay nears, for a Firefly soundtrack, and they don't trust the fans enough for an actual CD release! Look at the DVD sales and tell me this soundtrack wouldn't be one of its hottest sellers! They could be making a mint by embracing the show and taking advantage of a desperate fanbase, but instead, with a total lack of fanfare, they just grudgingly eke out a selection of tracks Greg Edmonson recorded years ago, and what they do release is choked with DRM so thick that Mac users can't even play the songs with the current version! And anyone that can download it will have to burn it to CD and rip it back to their computer if they want to play it on an iPod or any other WMA-unfriendly device. And apparently the Fox store only takes credit cards with American addresses, effectively eliminating the international market. Do they want fans to be forced to resort to piracy? (Hey, just like our heroes!)

And as a final insult, "Hero of Canton" isn't included. There's no coming back from that. Of course, it's possible that they coulde only include stuff Greg actually wrote, and he didn't write "Hero of Canton", or for that matter, River's dance in "Safe", which one would fully expect to be on a Firefly soundtrack.

Lots of fans have reported difficulty downloading it, but have had more success following these instructions. Personally, I'm going to wait a few days to see if Fox looks like it's going to make any concessions to our demands. Feh. In the meantime, I'll content myself with Sneaker98's ripped-straight-from-the-DVDs complete Firefly score.

(P.S. Firefly soundtrack! EEEEEE. Ugh, the music from "Out of Gas" kills me dead. I love this show and I love this music. I can't wait to hear these new tracks in their entirety!)

Topping my list of "homework that makes you cry" is Question #4 in my Psychology of Perception class: Describe the first letter of this sentence using methods of introspection on the sensory experience. Fortunately, my answer only has to be a 1/2 to 1 page, as opposed to 1 1/2 pages, as I first read. I can totally BS a page.

Anyway, I just noticed the typo in the entry three posts down, wherein I gripe about the gaping "hope" in our ceiling. I'm really entertained. I didn't know hope could gape. You learn something new every day!

Oh! You know how I wrote that post the other day, griping about how no one would fix the gaping hope in our bathroom ceiling because there was no leak. We just got our wish granted the hard way. The guys directly above us were cleaning their shower yesterday, and part of that water found its way through our ceiling. Fortunately, the leak is directly over the toilet, so it's not nearly as messy as it could have been. Maintenance assures us that they'll send someone by soon. Now that we're on the "emergency" list, hopefully that will be within the next few days, rather than the next few months.

Meanwhile, I'm annoyed, because I appear to have left my Sally boots at home, and I was planning to wear the costume again to the screening Wednesday. Guess I'll wear my other all-purpose, all-fandom boots, worn as Zoe, Vetinari, miscellaneous Jedi, a Mary Sue, etc etc etc. Or maybe my jazz slippers (Aldonza, Andromache) would be more fitting...

It's sad when a large percentage of my clothing is associated with cosplay. :D

I am so entertained. In immitation of the popular Summer of Spike community, a bunch of fen have gathered together to form Fall for Spike, with one major difference: no Spuffy allowed. And not because it's one of most common ships, and they want to give other pairings the spotlight. It's because of the alley scene in Dead Things. "Because all of Spike's other relationships are so healthy, " Barb notes.

I love it, it's wank waiting to happen. Hmm, "wankbait" is a good word.

*laughs* The clip answering the question "who's at the door?" in the season finale of Veronica Mars has been leaked. (If the video doesn't work, try it with VLC) Now the question remains: Are they kidding?

First off, from the promo, unless the scene with Logan was a flashback (which it can't be, because it was day), it's pretty much impossible for Logan to be the one at the door. So we ask ourselves: Would Rob Thomas--the man who scripted two alternate endings for the season in the event the fandom figured out the identity of the killer--let the answer to the biggest VM question on the net get leaked?

The answer: heck yes, just not the correct one!

I heard somewhere that Joss Whedon, in an attempt to throw a wrench in the spoiler factory, filmed two alternate endings for the last scene in Buffy season 6: one in which Spike got his soul, and the other in which he gets his chip removed. That way, no one involved with the show could say for sure which scene would be used. I'm not sure if this story is actually true, but I definitely wouldn't put it past Joss to try it with such a major reveal.

Therefore, I stand by my guns. I don't like it, but I'm convinced that Duncan is behind the door, despite the 307-ers protests. Of course, if the 307 theory is true, I will be utterly overjoyed at the sheer geekiness of the writers, and won't mind at all that I was completely and utterly wrong. Viva los fan speculation!

(Hey, wouldn't now be a good time to preorder the VM DVDs on Amazon? Out October 11th!)

I've only listened to a few tracks so far, and while I'm irked at the cutting of lines and the general mishmash, I refuse to pass judgement until I see how it's integrated with the visuals and context and such.

(contains spoilers for Wonderfalls and mid-season 1 Lost)

Last spring break, Chungy needed to catch up on Lost episodes, so we had a marathon at my house. One of the episodes we watched was "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues", in which Jack and crew go off in search of the kidnapped Charlie and Claire, and they find Charlie hung from a tree. I knew Chungy would be glancing at me every so often for clues of what would happen next, and if it was going to be good or bad, so I made myself tear up when they found Charlie's body, so that Chungy would conclude that he was, in fact, dead, rather than knowing that it would all be okay in the end, and that Jack would bring him back through the power of brute force.

That sentence was far too long.

Anyway, Ko and I watched the rest of Wonderfalls today, Aristotle be damned. Because I didn't want Ko to have any idea that it all turned out right in the end, I decided to toy with a friend's brain once again! As Ko agonized over the Jaye/Eric/Heidi triangle, I responded to her complains in a bitter tone, subtly hinting that Eric and Heidi would be together in the end, and that I was as annoyed with the finale as she was. It made it all the more squeeish when our OTP was preserved, and all ended happily.

In sum, messing with people's expectations is fun! And that's all I have to say about that.

I had intended to see Aaron and a bunch of Lady in the Dark friends in their production of Love's Labor's Lost on College Green tonight, but disaster struck on multiple counts for the cast: ominous stormclouds loomed over the horizon, and a sudden upsurge of heavy winds knocked over a set pieces, sending an actor to the hospital. They tried to muscle together a change of venue, but too much was conspiring against them, so they moved the show to tomorrow night.

Instead, I badgered Ko and Deep into watching the first episode of Wonderfalls, and they were instantly hooked. I don't know of a single person that has seen an episode of Wonderfalls that doesn't emerge convinced that it is the single best TV show in the universe (except maybe Firefly, but I don't dare compare the two. Mmm, Tim Minear. *happy sigh*). We ended up watching five episodes! We watched the first three, then Dee came in and joined us, and I felt that "Crime Dog" was a better introductory episode than "Wound-Up Penguin", so we watched that, and then Ko and Deep insisted that we watch the episode with Jaye and Eric kiss, which is probably my absolute favourite, so we did. And that sentence was WAY too long, but I care not!

If you haven't seen Wonderfalls yet, do so now. It's not a huge commitment! There are 13 episodes! Gravy, I love this show...

RRRGH. This is the third time maintenance has come by our room to make the necessary repairs, only to realize they'd gotten the wrong message and our situation is nowhere near as dire as others'. We just have a massive, gaping hope in the ceiling above the toilet, a wall that looks like it's been hit with a battering ram, a door split down the side, and a carpet that looks like it's been mauled! Of course, none of these are emergency fixes, and we could be perfectly happy living with them, but the false hope is terribly annoying.

"Yay, you're here to fix stuff!" we cry.
"Indeed! Where's the leak?"
"Um... there is no leak."
"Oh. Guess you'll have to keep waiting, then!"
"Curses!"

This image makes it all better.

The new Goblet of Fire trailer is out, and it's AWESOME. The CG alone makes my heart go pitter-pat. I'm quite curious, however, what happened to the Beauxbatons boys and the Durmstrang girls, and I'm slightly irked that their Mad-Eye Moody and Madame Maxime are so off base of my mental image (wasn't she supposed to have olive skin?), but overall, my reaction is a massive SQUEE.

Of course, amidst all this stuff I can't wait to see brought to life, there's also a lot of stuff I just don't want to see. Ko and I were discussing the darkness in the later books, and how our mental images are scary enough. I don't want to see Pettigrew chop his own arm off. I don't want to see Harry's detention with Umbridge. I don't want to see the cave scene in HBP, or Sirius' death. I also don't want to see a lot of silly Harry/Ginny fluff, but that's for entirely different reasons. Ko and I are worried that even though this movie is PG-13, parents will take their kids anyway, and they'll have nightmares as a result. I don't know how you can do justice to the books without causing a few nightmares. Feh.

Joss Whedon to Guest Star on Veronica Mars! A testy rental car manager in episode 6. Hopefully, this (along with Charisma Carpenter) will draw some of the Whedonverse contingent to check out VM!

Thanks to Meghan for pointing it out to me!

Terry Pratchett! EEEEE! Our stop was fairly early on his signing tour, so he seemed a lot more genial and energized in comparison with last year. He arrived 30 minutes early and started the signing process before he spoke, so that we could all get out at a sane hour. Ko and I were some of the first up! I got Thud!, Where's My Cow?, and my Discworld Family Values poster signed, we took pictures in which I look like I'm controlling an elaborately detailed Terry Pratchett hand-puppet, and I asked him two questions: No, the naming of Nobby's girlfriend was not a reference to his Jingo pseudonym, and alas, we're not likely to get much of a change in the Carrot/Angua dynamic in the near future. I guess I'll just have to rely on fanfiction to get my fix. *sigh* Why is there PRACTICALLY NO CARROT/ANGUA FANFICTION? Come on, fandom! There are enough Vimes/Vetinari fics out there. Can someone represent for the canon ships?

*coughs politely* Anyway!

The crowd was a fair size -- Borders proved to be momentously stupid and only set up seating for 40 or so. Ko and I arrived an hour early, and we had to sit on the floor.

He started speaking promtly at 7. Highlights included: 1) Comparing sci-fi fans with British footballers. He envisioned hordes of fen prowling the streets of London, shouting rallying cries of "DR WHOOOOO!" ("There are football fans who make the most rabid trekkie look like an Amish minister.") 2)His famous near-sandwich experience. No summary can do justice to the telling. 3) "It's nice to go on tour in the States, because in Britain, I have almost as much money as God. Who has almost as much money as JK Rowling."

And I got several compliments on my Serenity shirt, so all is good.

David Lynch - Sept. 28, 7PM Harrison Auditorium
Mr. Lynch will be a featured speaker at a free lecture at Penn on Sept 28th. He will be joined by a group of scientists, including Penn's own leading brain researcher, Dr. Andrew Newburg, and by John Hagelin, PhD, the quantum physicist who was featured in last year's hit documentary, "What the Bleep!?". All will be presenting on the theme of Consciousness, Creativity, and the Brain."

Tripped and nearly fell down long flight of concrete stairs. Was saved from certain death by exceptionally cute Chinese boy. Good day.

*kills Blogger dead* I had a seriously long entry, which Blogger just ate. Die, Blogger, die!

Anyway, lots happened yesterday! First off, I can't wait until September 27th, because that's the day the Serenity soundtrack comes out. The new website has a slightly extended clip of the track "Serenity", one of the Soundtrack Samples released at Comic Con. Though what I'm really here to post about is my squeefulness at the TV spots, posted yesterday (Menu -> Video -> "Good Guys" and "Passenger"). Usually, I dislike TV spots, but I rather liked these. Three cheers!

Also, if this Session 416 prop is real, I'm officially terrified out of my mind. No spoilers, but those that haven't seen the movie should check it out again after they have. *shudders*

Next up: Packages! Penn has a seriously weird system when it comes to UPS in the first month of each school year. Because they get so many boxes and they don't want to overcrowd the mail room, rather than putting them through their usual processing system, they just toss them all in a massive trailer in a driveway half a block from the buildings. They don't even notify us when something has arrived. It took me three passes before I figured out what I was looking for, but I triumphed in the end! And there before me was everything I'd been waiting for! My bedclothes, my coat, and my bag, purchased in New York last weekend, and my TV! My room is now spun of pure hotness. I'll take pictures and post them this afternoon!

Also in the accomplishment category, I spend half an hour on hold with Epson and another half-hour with tech support, trying to figure out why my printer would only produce blank sheets of paper. They're sending me a replacement this morning. *stabs Epson, but politely, because they gave me quite a hefty discount, even though my warranty expired a year ago*

In other news, I love my Poli Sci recitation, I sold a print of Dream, Thud comes out today, and I meet Terry Pratchett again tomorrow! Huzzah!

Der. I have no idea where my camera charger is. Did I even pack it? Hmm.

Oh well. Meanwhile, remember that $150 textbook I found online for $30? Now I know why I got it so cheap! Printed on the cover is "This edition is manufactured in India and is authorized for sale only in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Circulation of this edition outside of these territories is UNAUTHORIZED."

DUDE. I have a BLACK MARKET physics textbook!

The contents are identical to the $150 version, it's just printed on a lower-quality paper, and it's in black and white, but it's a physics textbook! I really couldn't care less. Also, theirs come split in half, whereas mine is a luscious, doorstopping 1883 pages! Paperback, 8x10 inches and 2 5/8" thick. I can't wait to show off my illegal textbook to all the other kids. I bet they don't have illegal textbooks like mine!

Huh. Well, that explains why my official schedule is so different from what I wrote down. It turns out that when I was signing up for courses, I accidentally typed in the wrong course number, putting me in Intro to Poli Sci as opposed to Intro to American Politics. Oh well, both sound nifty, and Intro to Poli Sci fits in my schedule much better, so three cheers! And I'm still going to try to get into the Public Opinion and American Democracy course anyway, so it might not even matter.

Clip from Corpse Bride! MAN, they've come a long way since Nightmare Before Christmas. It looks fantastic!

BTW, the two Serenity clips MovieFone posted are now seven! And speaking of Serenity clips, the last Session 416 clip is up.

And speaking of awesome upcoming movies, I'm peeved that Dallas gets Mirrormask, but Philly doesn't. I guess that makes up my mind for me, whether I see Mirrormask or Serenity on the 30th. (Above link also contains a listing of some excellent book-related Katrina charities, and part of the epic "demon salsa" tale currently unfolding on Neil's blog).

I haven't really been in a blogging mood recently, but I feel a brief recap is fitting.

Firstly, Ko's and my room could kick your room's shiny rear end. So geekish, and so pretty! Pictures soon to come, as soon as my new bed stuff arrives. And my Serenity poster that I ordered the other day on eBay! Of course, because that's just my luck, I had to order it the same day they released the new International Poster. Anyway, my new bed stuff is gooooooorgeous, and I got everything at ridiculously good prices. I win at shopping!

In general, I'm quite pleased with my classes this semester. Today was our first day! The Poli Sci course I signed up for as a filler actually looks quite cool, so I definitely won't be disappointed if I don't get into the more advanced class. Either way, the timing of my schedule works swimmingly. In case I didn't post before, I'm taking: Cinema Production, Mathematics of Computer Science II, Psychology of Perception, Intro to American Politics, and Physics.

New York was utterly awesome. Mom and I shopped long past the point we should have dropped. We also saw the Matisse exhibit at the Met, which was fantastic. Spamalot was crazy fun, yet disappointing at the same time. I wanted to shout, "Come on, Eric Idle! You're a much better songwriter than this!" And format-wise, a musical about knights is a lot less funny than a bunch of knights that randomly burst into song. Of course, all this was offset by the presence of Alan Tudyk who is utterly hilarious beyond words. Alas, terrible luck, I didn't get to meet him. But I did pass a note detailing next month's Pennsylvania Shindig to one of the security guys, and he said he'd get it to Alan. It's a long shot, but there's no harm trying. We also saw The Light in the Piazza, which had utterly gorgeous staging. I was built up a bit too much for it, but I still really enjoyed it.

MAN. Rebecca and I had this same idea when we were in New York last Spring. Except we called it "Corpse Cam", and our scam was going to be a lot more in-depth. A section of the site about the "deceased" (played by me), a fake Livejournal for our girl that went back at least several months, etc. Come on, if you're going to run an internet gag, go full hog!

So I'm back in Philly. Since I arrived, I have had leftover pudding, put away 2/3 of my clothes, and recounted the plot of Serenity to Ko, who would rather wait for it to come out on DVD than see it in theatres due to the violence.

Meanwhile, here's a list of organizations whose offers of aid have been denied. Shame on you, Michael Brown. Shame on you, George Bush. This is disgusting.

Two Serenity clips from MovieFone. Wow, it's amazing how much more exciting those scenes seemed in the actual theatre! :D Both are from fairly early on in the movie, for those concerned about spoilers.

And a three-minute preview for the next season of Veronica Mars.

Two new Serenity reviews, one very favorable and the other "It's not a second season of Firefly, and therefore it sucked." Very mild spoilers.

Meanwhile, I'm irked because I had preordered Anansi Boys and the Serenity Visual Companion a few weeks ago, and they should have shipped yesterday. Amazon says (for reasons beyond my comprehension) that they won't be shipped until September 7. I just emailed customer service to gripe about it. Why does Amazon list two seperate release dates for Anansi Boys on the same page? And if Anansi Boys indeed comes out September 20th, why will it take a week to be shipped? And why does Thud! show "Usually ships within 24 hours" under Availability, when it shouldn't come out for another two weeks?

Good lawd. Outtakes from several Serenity cast photoshoots! (No spoilers, obviously. They have nothing to do with the movie itself.) Sean Maher wins the "stupid looking hair" award, and the second image kills me dead. Nathan looks so amused -- the Mal/River fans are going to be having a field day! It took me a while to find the rest of Alan Tudyk's body. It's nice that he and Gina are side by side for once!

As for the third image, Ron Glass looks ready to dance flamenco, Summer looks ready to dance the Cell Block Tango, Alan looks ready to introduce Masterpiece Theatre, and Sean looks ready to head to the garage to give Greased Lightning a tune-up.

As for all the rest, someone needs to get Summer a big, greasy burger, and STAT. Look at her little arms in that first individual shot! I could snap her wrists with my thumb and index finger! EAT, woman! And ditto for Jewel Staite. I miss my "actually has some meat on her bones, rather than being stick-thin" Kaylee. Heck, greasy burgers for everybody!
