The Cult of Lincoln

Mmm, Christmas! Full of Social Occasions (alternately delightful and dreadful), debilitating illness (mum got the flu on the 23rd), kitchen wenching (Sister, Dad, and I cooked a turkey! And it was moist and delicious! Also vegemables, and I made an apricot and ginger pie from scratch. IM IN UR KITCHINS, MAKIN' UR PIEZ!), a seldom-seen grandmother and uncle, movies (Casino Royale and Dreamgirls, both excellent), home movies of Christmas '86 (I was two and Sister was four), and prezzies up the wazoo!

From Parents:
Ex Machina TPB #3 and Fables TPB #8
Really cute earrings
Adorable and ridiculously comfy boots

From Sister:
An awesome embroidered hoodie I'm wearing right now
Makeup

From Aunt and Uncle:
iPod speakers/alarm clock
GPS for my car
Really cute cuff bracelet

From Keith:
A shirt with a knight on it that says "Ni." Kind of the best thing ever.

From the Intarwebs:
High-Res Promo Pics for The Dresden Files, with infinite love to txvoodoo on LJ.

Gooooood Christmas. *pats belly*

Nicholas Was...
older than sin, and his beard could grow no whiter. He wanted to die.

The dwarfish natives of the Arctic caverns did not speak his language, but conversed in their own, twittering tongue, conducted incomprehensible rituals, when they were not actually working in the factories.

Once every year they forced him, sobbing and protesting, into Endless Night. During the journey he would stand near every child in the world, leave one of the dwarves' invisible gifts by its bedside. The children slept, frozen into time.

He envied Prometheus and Loki, Sisyphus and Judas. His punishment was harsher.

Ho.

Ho.

Ho.

Public Service Announcement: John Barrowman and Terrence Mann are too awesome to merely speak as ordinary men speak. I hereby propose a Torchwood/Dresden Files crossover musical episode. Or maybe being forced to speak everything through song is part of the curse that bound Bob's spirit to the skull. Yes, I believe that would be the ideal solution.

Chungy: Silly, "Thank You, Jesus" originated long before Ricky Bobby. I was thinking specifically of Christine Lavin's commentary on her song "Regretting What I Said" on Live From the Cactus Cafe, a CD which came out in 1993. And I have no doubt in my mind that it's much older than that.

*SQUEAK* OMG, BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER! Disney is returning to hand-drawn 2D animation exclusively, while Pixar will continue to do its groovy 3D thing. THANK YOU, BABY JESUS!

So American Dog is now going to be 2D... I wonder what this means for Rapunzel? How cool would it be for Disney to return to their grand tradition of 2D animated musicals of fairy tales?

Also, learning that American Dog is being directed by the guy that gave us Lilo & Stitch gives me great hope for its awesomeness.

Jesus... Santa... Hanukkah Harry... Hogfather... John Lasseter... you guys rock.

Foo. I can't switch to the new Blogger yet, as they can't handle "very large blogs (more than a couple thousand posts + comments)." Do Cult of Lincoln's 5875 posts intimidate you, Blogger? Do they, punk?

I'm quite pleased about the new tags feature (they call it "labels," but come on, we all know where you got the idea). Now they just need to implement an equivalent of the LJ-cut.

I'm home! Actually, I got home yesterday, but I was sleeeeepy, so no blog entry. Renata, Jimmy, Becky, and Laura--I got your prezzies in the mail this morning. They probably won't arrive in time for Christmas, but they should arrive before New Year's.

BBC, Azureus Announce Legal DW Downloads to US: BBC Worldwide is licensing bit-torrent provider Azureus to distribute legal episodes of Doctor Who to the United States early next year. According to Business Wire, the deal marks the first Peer-to-Peer distribution partnership for the network.

BRAVO, BBC!

I love that Bruce Tinsley, cartoonist of the unfunny and irritating "Mallard Fillmore," was arrested for DUI, only two weeks after suggesting Jon Stewart was a pedophile. Clearly, Somebody Up There thinks you're an asshat.

Also full of holiday cheer: Seasons Greetings from Battlestar Galactica.

And a Holiday present (read: mistake?) from iTunes, the audio book of Areas of My Expertise is being offered for free! John Hodgman urges us to download it immediately.

A quarter to midnight, Ko was watching The Two Towers:EE Commentary, and she got to the bit where Billy and Dom natter on what kind of dessert is comparable to their return after fifty minutes of non-Merry and Pippin action. I, working diligently on my fairy tales paper, went to see what she was giggling about, and we listened to the clip together.

I mused, "Mmmm, Pie."

Ko looked at me. "Let's get some."

I grinned. "Let's get some!"

So we did. We went to Fresh Grocer and got pie. Two pies, actually, but if you mention this to us we will deny it and claim it was only one. Just because I prefer Apple and she prefers Blueberry does not merit buying two pies! Also whipped cream.

We are so awesome. The rest of my life is going to suck. Where else am I going to find a roommate that will go out with me for almost-midnight pie runs after I graduate? I think that needs to be my top criterion in a potential boyfriend.

P.S. The pie was delicious. Penn friends (Penn pals? Too easy), feel free to come by and eat some! It's not like Ko and I are going to be able to finish two pies one pie in the tree days we have before we go home.

It's official! Nathan has the lead in Drive! And the newest issue of SciFi Magazine has an article on The Dresden Files and pictures, one of which makes my shipper's heart go pitter-pat. Becky scanned all the images and sent them to me. And I totally kicked butt on my Film exam, and I got an A- on my Serenity paper! Oh, Happy Hanukkah, one and all!

*squeals* Rumor has it, they're recasting Tim Minear's "Drive," and they're putting Nathan Fillion in the lead role! Oh, suddenly it doesn't matter that I just totally flunked a math exam. Nathan Fillion! On my TV! On another show Executive Produced by Tim Minear! JOY!

Make that FOUR new Dresden ads in the past two days! Check them all out here.

Speaking of, here's A Dresden Ad I'd Pay Money To See:

Plain white background. Three people enter.

Justin Long: I'm a Mac.
John Hodgman: And I'm a PC.
Paul Blackthorne: And I'm Harry Dresden.
*Justin Long and John Hodgman keel over head*

And now, my Fairytales Exam!

Happy Birthday, Chungy and Becky! So why am I getting all the presents? Two additional Dresden promos made their way to the internet last night!

Promo 3, "24 Hours"
Promo 4, "Different Kind of Detective"
And we suspect there may be a fifth out there.

A list of all teasers and promos to date can be found here.

By the way, Jimmy? If you mention the previous post to John, I may have to kill you. And I will keep your zombie shirt for MYSELF. This is a course of action that will make nobody happy. I trust you will do the right thing.

John Cassaday thinks I'm funny. John Cassaday, who has been collaborating with Joss Whedon for the past two years or so, thinks I'm funny. And he shook my hand for what had to have been a full minute. It felt longer. That graceful yet manly hand, capable of creating such phenomenal art, was in contact with mine for a full minute.

I'll blog about the rest of my New York adventures celebrating Jimmy's birthday later. Probably not tomorrow, as I have a ridiculous amount of stuff to accomplish, but soon. I just thought you should know that John Cassaday thinks I'm funny.

I think the Starbuck/Apollo shippers' slogan should be "Nobody doesn't like Kara/Lee!"

Except for the possible exception of me, as I find them tiresome. :D

Good episode last night, Jane. Good episode!

Yay! I finally mustered the courage reread my Serenity paper for the first time now that I'm no longer sleep-deprived, and it is surprisingly awesome! Bravo me! I think I'll post it online somewhere after I get it back from my professor.

Sky One presents: The Twelve Days of Hogswatch. And squee, for some reason I thought it was actually airing on Christmas! It's going to be the 17th and 18th of December instead. The main site is here.

Finished Cursor's Fury, third book in Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series. Great googly moogly, that was fabulous! It may be popcorn, Jim, but it's really, really, really, really good popcorn.

Um, everyone should read The Dresden Files! Of which this book is not a part, but still.

Tonight was also our last Feminist Fairy Tales class, and the Rice Krispie Treats I made for the occasion went over quite well! I learned to my shock and horror that Ko had never seen a Rice Krispie Treat made by actual humans, only those packaged and sold premade. Is this a cultural thing? A "Ko was homeschooled" thing? A "Ko is just a freak, what loser has never made Rice Krispie Treats" thing? Or god forbid, a "Priscilla is just a freak, what nerd still makes Rice Krispie Treats in this day and age" thing? Ticky-box?

Anyone know when House, Veronica Mars, and Studio 60 return?

Also, I thought BSG returned January 21st, after the premiere of The Dresden Files. Am I mistaken? Is this just their move to their new timeslot, and new episodes don't begin again until April?

Help a fangirl out!

*returns to reading Cursor's Fury*

Ooh! I forgot to mention that Ko and I saw Happy Feet the other day. Oh my gosh, I want five tiny penguins to follow me around and glorify themselves in outrageous accents. Robin Williams totally carried that movie. And I want the soundtrack. Go see it! Feel-good movie of the decade.

Also, my birthday gift from Renata arrived today! It's a plush Albert Einstein to match Renata's plush Lincoln and Keith's plush... some historical figure I can't remember at the moment. I fail at life. But Einstein wins, so it all balances out. YAY for the Sappy Lincoln Narratives Road Trip 2007!

Ugh. One of our assignments for Fairytales class this week is an online novel called The Ice Puzzle, which makes my brain bleed and my eyes roll back in my skull for the sheer badness of it. It's perplexing. I've enjoyed (and often adored) all the other books we read this semester with the exception of The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf, and at least in that case I could recognize the craft of the book and appreciate the larger metaphors. And the operas themselves were pretty awesome. I just loathed all the characters.

Whereas this? Drivel. Flowery, repetitive drivel with a dire case of metaphor abuse. Ko and I have been reading particularly egregious lines out loud and alternately laughing uproariously, groaning in sympathy, and marveling that Veronica--who has displayed impeccable taste so far--would assign this and have it not be a joke.

I'm so glad Jim Butcher's Cursor's Fury comes out tomorrow. I'm really going to need to purge my mind after reading this. Urgh. 12 down, 13 chapters to go. It burns us, precious!

Renata sent me a belated birthday card with Pirates of the Caribbean stickers on it! If there's anything more awesome than this card around, I want it caught and shot now.

When does/did the musical episode of Scrubs air? Because this is fabulous. Of course, I shouldn't expect anything less, seeing as how the songs were written by the Avenue Q team. *googles* Okay, looks like January 18th at 9 EST on NBC.

This is approximately reason number five trillion why I love Howard Dean.
