The Cult of Lincoln

Bleh. Yesterday was scary. I couldn't stand up long enough to make myself food without getting dizzy and nearly blacking out and/or throwing up, so I didn't actually eat anything until like 5pm. And because the only food I had in the fridge was leftover take-out, I had to contend with veggie fried rice. Guess it doesn't help to live above a grocery store when you can't stand up for more than a couple minutes at a time.

Today, while a HUGE improvement over yesterday, I'm still feeling vaguely nauseous and sleepy, despite only being awake for a sum total of about 6 hours yesterday. I called in sick again at work, saying I'd try to be in at noon. However, just as I was getting dressed, I was suddenly hit with another bout of TMI, so that didn't happen. I should be fine by tomorrow, but urgh. Unpleasant.

Fortunately, Jayna (a girl my roomie and I knew from Hockaday) is staying with us for the weekend, and she made toast for me. I feel much less miserable just having someone around.

I got to attend the WGA Solidarity Rally in Washington Square Park yesterday! I arrived too late to see John Edwards speak, but I got to hear from awesome folks like Danny Glover, Tim Robbins, and Aasif Mandvi. Sweet!

For those that don't know what's going on (have you been living under an internet-rock?), here's The Writers Strike Explained. Meanwhile, the writers continue to raise awareness of the fact that they aren't being paid for their writing appearing online by writing online material for free. I can't be the only one tickled pink by the irony. :D Here are some of my favourite videos:

Ninjas support the writers!

In other news, six years ago, The Daily Show did a spoof on reality TV with "Pitch," in which "Average, everyday Hollywood producers are locked in a house for three months and given one simple task: come up with more ideas for reality programs." EVERY SINGLE ONE of the ideas they generated is better than these actual game shows for the spring 2008 season. I weep.

I HAVE AN iPHONE! ALSO LEOPARD! The universe, she smiles.

Mmm, early birthday festivities are the best kind! November 23rd, by the way. :D I'll be 23 on the 23rd, which I've been looking forward to since one of my childhood friends turned 7 on the 7th.

Suggestions for ringtones are welcome!

Ooh! I've been holding off on getting an iPhone because I kept hearing rumblings of the Gphone, but now that I know it won't be coming out for another year... gimmie!

More on the Gphone here, for those interested. The G stands for Guuuurgle.

I've finally gotten around to posting my artsy photos from the massive Sappy Lincoln Narratives road trip, from the beginning of this summer. Maybe someday I'll actually write a blog entry about it! See photos from Dinosaur National Monument, Arches, Mesa Verde, The Grand Canyon, Antelope Point, Zion, Grand Canyon Caves, and Havasupai!

Clicky!

Then hurrah, the Doctor Sketchy's tradition continues! See my drawings here!

I'm going to see Tim Burton tonight! But don't be sad your evening won't be a fraction as cool as mine. You can still watch Simon Pegg Dancing in Paper Underpants.

Thursday!

I had to stay in and work through lunch on Friday, but with Variety conjecturing that the strike may extend into 2008, I'll have plenty of opportunity to show support.

Huzzah, I have fed the downtrodden! I just brought a pizza to the striking writers in Columbus Circle, which was met with joy and merriment and was devoured in ten minutes. Tomorrow, they're back in Rockefeller Center. Fellow New Yorkers can get the schedule here. I might have to bring two pizzas next time! :D It feels good to give back to the folks that have given me so many years of great entertainment.

GLEE! James Marsters' site just announced that he'll be doing the audio book of Small Favor, tenth book of The Dresden Files! Details here.

And FREAKING SQUEE! I just got THE LAST TICKET to see Tim Burton at the Lincoln Center next week! ...At least, the last Mezz seat. Which... drat. Probably means it's the worse in the Mezz section. I should have gone with Balcony. But I just bought my ticket, so oh well. I'm sure every seat will be a good one! Stupid confusing thing saying "1 ticket left," misleading me and making me rush my decision. But it will be awesome, and EEE TIM BURTON.

I stopped by Rockefeller Plaza at my lunch break today, but there was no one picketing, alas. I was going to come back with pizza if there had been. Why did it not occur to me to stop by yesterday? It's four blocks from my work! I fail.

In the meantime, here's a list of how shows are going to be affected.

Why hello there! Photos of politicians in their hot youths. General consensus is that Edwards looks eerily like Zac Efron.

And the newest song from the Obama Girl: Perfected.

Oh my good lord. Anyone that has seen even a single episode of Torchwood needs to read Torchwood Babiez, right now. Too much cute, liver shutting down...

Thoughts on Dollhouse, by the way:

Although the "Fox" part makes me cringe, I'm delighted to see that they've already picked up the first seven episodes. Hopefully we'll get to see at least three of them before it's canceled to make way for a reality TV show about ordinary Americans performing oral surgery on each other. On the other hand, the success of Lost and Heroes and my beloved Pushing Daisies gives me hope that the world at large is starting to appreciate high concept genre TV, rather than it just being beloved by a niche fanbase. Maybe it has a chance!

Regardless, it's always better to have lived and loved and gotten preemptively canceled and launched massive, fruitless renewal campaigns than never to have loved at all.

Hey, boys and ghouls! Hope you all had a lovely Halloween! I once again rocked my Maeve costume, though I elected to go with a more work-friendly alternative, which was actually closer to what's described in canon. :D Everyone loved it! (Especially Melissa, who kept coming up to me and squeezing the wig, which is wonderfully soft and squeezable.) Instead of the pale blue wrap top, I wore a white wife beater over a light blue bra, and instead of my 6" Plastic Heels of Tacky Awesome, I donned big, stompy, 20-eye Doc Martens. Unfortunately, said Docs are still not completely worn in, and I now have blisters on the backs of my ankles. Boooo. At least the "Boooo" I feel is in keeping with the spirit of Halloween!

Another "Booooo" goes to my job, as I had to do two hours of overtime last night, and I subsequently missed the Village parade, which I'd really been looking forward to. But I got to go to dinner at Hill Country BBQ with Jimmy and the Meanies (would make a half-decent band name), which was crazy fun! They import Big Red--soft drink of the Gods--straight from Texas, and its siren call was so great that I, who have not had a soft drink since the 7th grade, was moved to order a bottle.

I look one sip, and suddenly I was eight years old, sitting at a table at Kitchen's Hardware with my dad, trying to figure out the secrets of a series of tricks, like "how do you get this metal ring on to this pair of interlocked horseshoes?", which were scattered across the tables. Kitchen's was a combination hardware store/restaurant on the road to my grandfather's house in East Texas, and every time we went down I begged to eat there. Their soft drink freezer had a built-in bottle cap remover, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I always had either Big Red or Welch's Grape Soda. On one memorable occasion at Kitchen's, my dad taught me basic algebra. Mmm, that was my childhood.

But yes! Great BBQ, half of which is now residing in my fridge. As the Meanies were heading back to Wales the next afternoon, they fobbed their leftovers onto me, and Jimmy added his own to my Massive Heap of Deliciously BBQed Meat (and Veggies). So now I have leftovers to last a small army for three weeks! Hurrah! And the live band played twisted country songs about eating brains, which was merry.

Afterwards, we met up with Jimmy's pal John Lucas and his girlfriend for a drink. They asked about my costume, and I got to plug the Dresden Files comic. Good stuff! :D Then I checked my email on my cell and saw that Joss Whedon has a new TV show! EEE! A splendid time was had by all. I wish, wish, wish I'd been able to go to the parade, but alas, it was not to be. Next year! Hope everyone's Halloween was festive and fun!
