Dear Priscilla,

STOP WHINING. There are children in Bhutan that don't even know what Halloween is. Does it really matter that you had to go a year without celebrating your favourite holiday?

Freshman year, you spent three hours doing your Nightcrawler makeup. This year, you grabbed a costume you had previously made, chosen based on what could be put on in the same amount of time as normal clothes. It balances out.

Love,
The only part of your brain apparently not having any say in your emotional state

P.S. That Ben & Jerry's in the fridge? That's what it's there for.

Well. That was an utter waste of eight hours. We did our first shoot for "Zeyen and Nazia", the short film we're making for my Cinema Production class. Now, our actress was great in auditions when she was interacting with another person, but when she's just doing stuff on her own? GAH. And my role was "Acting Coach", so it was my job to try to figure out how to cajole a SINGLE FACIAL EXPRESSION out of her. And one of these was a very emotional, pivotal scene! Her face was totally blank the entire time, even when Gopal (the screenwriter) and I tried to coach her from off-camera, to tell her what to do. AAARGH. And my experience was not improved by the untimely death of my digital camera or the looming Poli Sci midterm tomorrow morning.

HOLY COW! How come no one told me about this until now? Apparently, Lori (GlockGal) and I won "Best in Show" (or something similar) at The Witching Hour for our Luna/Ron Valentine!

Does anyone know more about this? Were other artists awarded, and where can we see their stuff?

Oh! Forgot to mention that in class on Wednesday, we showed the class the audition tapes for the short film we're producing, "Zeyen and Nazia." I was offscreen, reading lines with the actor as they auditioned. We found an East-Asian guy we really liked, but we weren't as happy with the crop of South-Asian girls. After seeing several, one of the guys piped up, "Can't we just put Priscilla in makeup?" I was amused.

So last night I saw Mirrormask with Will, which was utterly phenomenal. If it's playing near you, you really need to see it on the big screen! I've seen some reviews that say it drags on a bit long, but I was too spellbound to notice the time going by.

After the movie was over, I raced back to Annenberg (with five minutes to spare!) to see Aaron in Metamorphoses, which was great! They managed to bring the Funny without detracting from the Drama, which can be a fine line. One of my favourite bits was the directorial decision that the guys, in Ancient Greek thespian tradition, wear lipstick and eyeliner. Too funny for words.

And now, back to homework and Poli-Sci Midterm studying. WAH.

I am SO CONFUSED. I think my local UPN affiliate just didn't air an entire scene. I'm so glad Ko didn't have dance class tonight, because I definitely needed a "Wha? What was this character doing and why?" partner. I can't wait for my the VM fandom contingent of my flist to check in, so I can see if the episode indeed aired as I saw it.

Though I was amused to notice that the actress that played the psychic also played Amber Benson's mother in Chance.

EDIT: Apparently, there was indeed a missing scene! Guess I'll be waiting with bated breath for it to go on BitTorrent, like everybody else.

Also, be sure to check out Season 1 on DVD.

My meeting with Amy went swimmingly. The biggest problem I've had with my math/engineering classes is that all of it seems totally worthless. Well, it's going to stop being worthless. I'm going to start an independent study with Norman Badler, and I'm going to learn how all this applies, and how to create special effects from scratch. This is exactly what I need! I don't mind agony if it's going somewhere cool. And this is what's going to give me job security! Good, good stuff!

Also, while working out my schedule for this spring, I observed that I was two very cool-looking courses away from a Cinema Studies minor. I had bandied about the idea of minoring in Theatre Arts, but I need four more classes, and I wasn't thrilled with the course selection. And I also found out that I can take Figure Drawing instead of the unexciting Drawing II to complete my Fine Arts minor! W00t!

I don't want to look a gift-horse in the mouth, but how is Mirrormask suddenly playing in Philadelphia? I've visited this page on at least three seperate occasions, and Philadelphia wasn't even on the radar. Thank you, Will, for telling me about it! I would have missed it, and MAN would I have been kicking myself. There would have been bruises.

Anyway, Will and his friends are going this Saturday, so hurrah! I'll have to gather some friends, and we can all go together. My people totally owe me for skipping out on seeing Serenity. *grins*

Update: Feeling better about life, though still hormonal. I'm meeting with Amy at 2 tomorrow to discuss my options. Also, Will used to be a tutor for 262, and he has graciously offered his services.

Broke down in loud, gulping, unpretty tears over current schedule, future schedule, loathing of all engineering classes in general, and general academic angst, triggered by CSE 262 homework. Sobbed uselessly at desk for some 15 minutes before giving up and going downstairs to be comforted by Ko, Deep, and Nikki. Feeling better, despite nothing actually being solved. Now emailing 262 professor re: tutoring. Will not go into further detail here, because I'll just start crying again. Parents: I'll call you tomorrow.

I love the sheer badness of Smallville. It's like watching a train crash that lasts five years. It was great to see James again! Does anyone know if he dyes his hair? I don't remember it being that reddish in Winding Roads. Of course, there's always the "covering up the gray" issue, so he probably does.

The height difference between James and Tom is adorable. On Buffy, the camera was always kind to James, and you didn't really notice he was short until he stood next to Riley or Adam. Or Xander. Or that vamp he tells to "find something to eat" in "School Hard." Now, there's just a subtle sense of HA HA LOOK AT HOW SHORT THIS GUY IS COMPARED TO CLARK!

Meanwhile, Aquaman needs to lay off the AquaFresh and drink some coffee or smoke some cigarettes, because MAN, his teeth were scary.

And in other Jossverse actor news, the trailer for Slither, the yeerk zombie movie starring Nathan Fillion is out! Looks delightfully bad.

The second half of the Mighty Fine Shindig Post!

We awoke Sunday morning to find that our tents had not only survived the night, but that the rain had stopped! Those of us that slept in the house (because I arrived early, I was able to claim one of the huge leather couches. So comfy!) We had another bountiful breakfast of Living Legend Eggs, and we shared mutual horror over the concept of Lox cream cheese.

In the trivia bee, I improved significantly from last year. Last year, I was knocked out in the first round. My question was "What does Shepherd Book say about spices?" I couldn't remember the quote exactly, though I now know that it's "A man can live on packaged food from now 'til Judgement Day if he has enough rosemary" (or marjoram in the shooting script). This year, I made top five in both rounds! In the first, I and two of my fellow top-fivers were knocked out with "What job has a 'prodigious death rate'." The answer was "terraforming crews" (Shindig). In the second, Kristin gave me a question that she said she wouldn't have given anyone else: "What is the name of the unfilmed '15th Episode'." I knew it was three words long, the middle word was "or", and the other two were opposites, but I couldn't remember the title. I guessed "Live or Die", and I was disgusted with myself when Kristin revealed it was "Dead or Alive." Ah well!

Then came Charades, which were one of the highlights of last year's Shindig. They didn't get nearly as out-of-control as they did last year, but they were still a hoot, especially when we opened the floor to memorable events from the previous Shindig. Suze ended up acting out her own meta-Charade: "Sami is subjected to Suze and Bonnet Bob (her parents) acting out Mal and Nandi's Love Scene in Heart of Gold." Jason pulled off an admirable "Priscilla falls off the fence, trying to be River in Objects in Space." Jimmy proudly continued our tradition of male spongebathers. Prizes were given out, and I won one of Suze's lovely floral bonnets! Crazy fun for the whole family!

As the Shindig wound to a close, we took the tents down, scrambled for leftover swag (I got a movie poster and a Serenity bandana), then loaded up the cars. I managed to swing a ride with Steve. Those that wanted to stay (the vast majority of us) caravanned to the theatre. 50 tickets for Serenity, please! We privately squealed when we saw that the ticket seller's name was "Ric". But alas! We learned afterwards that when Courtney and Ryan were taking a smoking break, they overheard Ric discouraging theatregoers from seeing the movie! What a jerk! He is unworthy of sharing the name of the true hero of Canton. I guess the "k" makes all the difference.

After the movie, Steve gave me a ride to the R5 station, and I was able to take the train back to Philly. All in all, a mighty fine Shindig!

HOLY COW. DOLORES UMBRIDGE WORKS AT FRESH GROCER, AND HER NAME IS KATHLEEN.

I wish I'd had my camera with me, so that I could discreetly take a picture. She was maybe 5 feet tall, with short, thinning, curly, mousy-brown hair. Her back was curved. She had an enormous flap/pouch/goiter/whatever of skin on her neck (the size of her head) and her lower lip jutted out, making her look like a bullfrog. I kept expecting her to turn to me, smile, and say "Hem hem." Totally surreal.

Just a quick post to let the online world in on what's the what! I'm at former-roommate Deep's house in Harrisburg for Fall Break. Ko and Nikki are here, too. Yesterday, we went shopping at the King of Prussia, the second-biggest mall in the nation, and today we're doing homework and studying like fiends. In our spare time, we have conquerred massive piles of dirt and claimed them for the Glory of Spain, and imparted to Deep's little sister the danger of rogue bobcat/pumas, also known as the "bobuma." Deep's sister is reading Animorphs. My fandom heart just did a little dance.

I have internet access, and I'll be checking my email, but I won't be checking LJ or any other blogs. I'll return Tuesday morning!

A joke to keep you company in my absence:
Person 1: Knock knock.
Person 2: Who's there?
Person 1: Doctor.
Person 2: Doctor Who?
Person 1: Exactly.

EDIT: EEEEW. On Deep's computer, my new layout is a hideous, sickly green. Please tell me it's pretty on all of your computers. I would be so sad if it wasn't.

Before this episode aired, I didn't know how much longer I was going to be watching Lost. The "ten billion questions, maybe one answer every couple seasons" style of writing was obnoxious, I found myself disliking many of the main characters, and the writers seemed to have forgotten my ship existed. After this episode? I was a joyous, squealing mess. A main character that felt keeping secrets was silly? PEANUT BUTTER? It's like the writers had plugged directly into my brain and discovered exactly what I found irritating, then fixed it.

I found myself being amused at Kate, and not actively disliking her! I loathe Kate!

Locke gave Charlie full disclosure on the contents of the hatch! When has anyone on "Lost" ever shared a secret with another unless it was dragged out of them by a team of stampeding wildebeest?

My ovaries rejoiced at Charlie being cute about Turniphead ("You'll lie to the baby?"), and after Charlie gave Claire the peanut butter, I was incapable of any making any sounds below 20,000Hz. I thought the writers had forgotten all about my beloved OTP!

Also: Hurley's dream, Charlie's reaction to the presence of a record player, "Driveshaft" being included among the "one-hit wonders", Hurley's friend that reminded me mildly of Mackenzie Crook, garden gnomes, Hurley's mom ("Falling down is not exercise!") and chocolate lollipops! I thought Firefly was my only fandom with people made of chocolate! And like always, the weather is HOT in Sayidistan! I'll be in my bunk.

Hurley episodes make the world beautiful. *grooves to Mama Cass' "Make Your Own Kind of Music" in celebration* Lost, you've won back your errant fan.

But Veronica Mars is still better. :D

Veronica Mars came out on DVD today! If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly suggest you give it a shot and either rent or buy the DVDs. The writing is tight, clever, and deliciously smart. The characters are some of the most intriguing and three-dimensional on TV. And now that it's up against Lost's timeslot, it's going to need a major fan transfusion to stay alive. Be sure to catch it Wednesdays at 9PM EST!

To catch you up, here's Alanna's Logan Echolls: A Biography in Screencaps, and the same for Duncan.

Tangentially Not at all related: Is the title of this copyfight article a Serenity reference?

And here's the long-awaited Big Damn Shindig post! Man, having this much fun should be illegal.

Over the weekend, we proved without a doubt that they couldn't take the sky from us--in fact, Mother Nature tried her darnedest to GIVE us the sky! Kristin (our lovely hostess) reported Sunday morning that we'd gotten 10 inches of rain on Saturday. As last year was known as the "2004 Rickstravaganza" (posts one and two), this year was referred to as the "Ten Thousand Miles of Rain" Shindig, as the Weather Channel reported that the entire East Coast was in a deluge, stretching all the way down to Cuba.

I left for the Shindig early, on Friday evening, to help out. On the train ride over, I listened to the audio book of Jim Butcher's Storm Front, which was awesome. I got the package notice an hour before I left--perfect timing! The audio book usually retails for $49, but being fabulous, I found it on eBay for $20. I finished it Monday morning, and I'm now scouring the web for a similarly discounted audio version of the second book in the series, with no luck so far.

I've come to realize that it's much easier for me to block out time to listen to an audio book than to read a book. It's the same for my sister. And this even applies to books I've been waiting for for months! I've had Anansi Boys for weeks and Son of a Witch since it's been out, and I've barely cracked the covers. I'm only just finishing The Big Over Easy, and it's been out since late summer. I fail at literacy.

Anyway, it turns out I was too late to help with the tents, which had been put up by Kristin (who had been kicked in the abdomen by a horse the previous week, and definitely needed the extra hands), Jen (the Australian), and Ryan and his wife Courtney. I was able to help out with signage and heavy-lifting, and only got mildly electrocuted by the icicle lights we were hanging around the tent's perimeter!

The next morning, we were treated to sausage, toast, and Kristin's mother's "Living Legend Eggs" (yes, that's a Jaynestown reference), which more than live up to their name. Best scrambled eggs on the face of the planet. Ryan and Paul (Kristin's brother) spent a lot of the morning fussing with the tents, which had survived the night's wind and rain against all odds. Around 11, when people started arriving, Paul came around with the "Big Damn Heroes," two massive sub sandwiches, one three feet and the other six feet long. We take our Firefly-themed food very seriously at the Pennsylvania Shindig!

After lunch and a prolonged meet-and-greet, we launched into Firefly Jeopardy. I was lucky enough to be picked out of the hat again, and even luckier to be on the Blue Bell team. The three bells--blue, red, and purple--were quite infamous last year, as in both games of Jeopardy last year, the Blues triumphed and the Reds failed miserably. I had been on the Blue team last year, paired with Steve, whom we later dubbed "Freakish Memory Guy." Steve ended up on the Purple team this year: it was his enormous brain against the curse! Can't you just feel the drama?

Well, the Curse won out. Or maybe, my team's combined Freakish Intellect won out. We triumphed, 16,000 for us to 7,000 purple and 200 red, or thereabouts. Though no one questioned Freakish Memory Guy's title when he remembered the name of the partygoer in "Shindig" who had his gun confiscated: Courtland. It was this year's equivalent of my remembering last year the two characters that are seen using sugar tongs throughout the series: Inara and Jayne. As I said, Freakish.

I felt good about myself and justified in last year's victory. For a long time, I'd been thinking that the only reason I won then was because I was paired with Steve, whereas this year, I was the one ringing in with the correct answer more often than not. I don't feel guilty any more, huzzah! I credit my success to my River costume.

Which reminds me! Costumes! Ryan and Courtney outdid themselves. Last year, Ryan came as Wash and Courtney had costumes for Kaylee and Saffron. This year, Ryan had a screen-perfect Jayne costume (he even grew his facial hair to match!), and Courtney was equally impressive in her Ariel EMT uniform. I was going for River's Objects in Space/Jaynestown outfit, though far from screen-accurate.

Before Rhyme's massive DVD auction, I gathered up my "Once More, With Feeling" cast for a runthrough. Last year, a bunch of us randomly burst into the musical and ended up singing from the beginning all the way through "Standing." Kristin suggested I put together something more organized this year, and it was so! We spent a few minutes going over the group numbers, then went back to the tents for the auction. (Well, first I changed in to my Zoe costume, because my River costume was far too cold.) There must have been over a hundred titles up for grabs! She gets huge numbers of free DVDs as a job perk, and she generously donated them to the Shindig to pay for Kristin's expenses.

After dinner (dessert: strawberry shortcake), as Kristin and a team of helpers set up the screenings and made popcorn, we put on our Singalong. Courtney made a fabulous Tara, Cephme made an impressive Giles, Sami was woefully underused as Dawn, Dan was endearing as Xander, Jessica had tremendous fun with Anya, I heartily mocked Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, and Mark came in at the last minute to play Sweet. Somehow, Scott ended up as Spike, even though he's never seen the episode and had to learn the music during the auction! I tried to rope in Kristin as Willow, but she weaseled out of it, giving the role to Josie, who also played Marti Noxon (the parking ticket lady). Ryan popped in long enough to provide David Fury's "They Got the Mustard Out." Jimmy, Steve (Freakish Memory Guy), and Rob voiced the "Going Through the Motions" demons and Joss' sung "Grr! Argh!" at the end. I'll write about it in a seperate post, illustrated with Ryan's pictures.

After the Singalong, we watched Jaynestown and Trash and cheered wildly for our real hero of Canton, Rick, the Mudder that throws himself in front of the bullet meant for Jayne. Our love for Rick blossomed at last year's shindig, when one of the fan-provided questions at the trivia bee inquired at the character's name. No one knew. The answer key said "Rick," but none of us could remember the name being mentioned, and it wasn't in the credits. A shindigger later observed that the actor had played Rick on 24 and that in the shooting script, the character is actually named Meadows, but our the name stuck. Rick became the Shindig's Figwit.

Because of the uncomfortable weather and temperature, I decided to turn in early rather than watch "Safe" with the others. I wasn't the only one. We'd all had a long day!

Sunday's events will be chronicled in a later post.

Yesterday, on Locust Walk, the pro-lifers were out in force. Every twenty feet for a block and a half, there would be stationed a pro-lifer with a glossy 4x3-foot poster of a gruesomely dismembered aborted fetus. People can be so vile.

Fortunately, the sidewalk next to the 38th Street Bridge compensated somewhat for the macabre spectacle on the other side. Someone had written out in huge masking tape letters an apology for sleeping with a guy. Contextual clues seemed to indicate that a guy had written it. I should have gotten a picture of it; it was gone this morning.

Today, I had two midterms, one in Psychology of Perception and the other in Physics. I was surprised by some of the Psyc questions and didn't do as well as I'd hoped, though I still think I did well. As for Physics, I rocked the first two of four questions, and I'm fairly convinced I did the same for the other two, but for those I'm either really right or really wrong. I still feel good about myself Physics-wise. I definitely felt like I had a handle on the material.

Meanwhile, why isn't anyone on LJ talking about the Earthquake in South Asia Saturday? I've only seen one post on it, a note from Leaky expressing condolances. Originally, I thought the RSS feed had messed up, and was dredging up posts from the tsumani last December. It's terrifying--this feels like it's been the Year of the Natural Disaster. The death toll is currently at 40 thousand--nearly a third of the death toll of the Tsunami and some forty times the loss of life from Katrina. I can only hope for any of you who have friends or relatives in the area that they were able to get to safety, and that the towns and families devastated in the quake are able to heal and rebuild.

Oh! I forgot to mention that we finally got our ceiling fixed today! The result is a square piece of plastic that looks like a hatch with no handle. I wanted to name it "Desmond" and write "4 8 15 16 23 42" along the edge, but Ko, having never seen an episode of Lost, vetoed my plan. In the end, we decided we would make a sign for the far wall that says "Escape Hatch" in Navy stencil lettering, pointing up. And I convinced her to let me put the Numbers along the edge, which should entertain all the Lost fans that happen to look up whilst using the toilet. As soon as the mischief is managed, I'll take pictures and post them.

You're KIDDING. After last night's vidding disappointment, out of curiosity (and a healthy dose of paranoia), I searched google to see if anyone had already done Muse's "Time is Running Out," the spuffy vid I've been plotting out and gathering clips for for the last couple weeks, only to find someone else has already done that one, too. In fact, it's been done at least twice. (And a third time, centering around Fred of all people, but I'm ignoring that.) But I like mine a lot more, so I'm sticking with it. Mine's all chronological, and much darker. Seasons 5&6: Spike's obsession, Spike's POV. It gets all dark and twisted; I'm very excited about it. I just wish I had a ridiculously silly Spangel vid to balance it out. </useless whinging>

I win the prize for "Outstanding Innovation in the Face of Stupidity"! My PSYC partner and I each spent over an hour trying to figure out how to generate sine waves in Excel. As we both wanted to spend last night studying for our midterms rather than finishing up what we thought would be a trifling exercise for our homework, we decided to meet before class to finish up. She came over at 9:30, and we spent the next hour trying to calculate values and hand-draw the graphs of various sine waves added together. Yuck. Then I had a stroke of inspiration. I input the functions into my graphing calculator, then used my digital camera to take a picture of the screen. I cleaned it up a bit in Photoshop, then slapped it into the homework file. Mmm, multimedia! It looks very artistic, as I'm reflected in the screen. :D

Anyway, just got back from my CSE midterm. I felt a lot more confident about my grasp of the material than I have for previous classes, so there's that working in my favor. I thoroughly pwnzed the first three of five problems, so regardless of what partial credit I may get, I know I have at least a 65, and these type classes are curved like woah, so I'm feeling good!

Someone beat me to the punch and made a Spike/Angel fanvid to Avenue Q's The More You Ruv Someone (The More You Want to Kill Them). And it's quite well done, too, so I'm not compelled to still make one myself out of spite. *frowls* The timing stinks, as over the past couple weeks, I've started to seriously pursue vidding, and I've been gathering clips. I guess sooner is better than later, though. If a vid like this already exists, it would be even more frustrating to discover it later in the game.

This is even more annoying than when someone else beat Rebecca and me to the punch with our Corpse Cam Scam.

Hey, looky at who's on the front page of IMDB! Please meet Summer Glau.

(Though I really don't like that picture of her. It creeps me out to no end. Though it's not nearly as creepy as this poster in the London underground.)

And I promised myself I wasn't going to post any more Serenity reviews, but I really liked this article from "The Guardian". And this article from Locus Online. So consider my vow broken. Um... have some Zombie!Jayne fanfiction!

As if "Apple" wasn't bad enough: Nicholas Cage names son "Kal-El"

I'm so glad that the humorously embarassing aspect of my name isn't readily obvious.

More great reviews for Serenity, to compensate for the uproariously funny Serenity fanatacism fanwank.

KSL Movie Show Review -- two Firefly virgins gush about how this was what the new Star Wars movies should have been like. Both give 3 1/2 stars out of 4, despite what it says on the front page.

IGN FilmForce awards Serenity "Movie of the Month"

RottenTomatoes tells Browncoats "Take your heads out of the oven."

NPR's Patrick Stoner has good things to say, but also calls it "lighter" than Star Wars. To that I say "huh?"

It's making fun of us, but it's worth a chuckle. Joss Whedon's Grocery List Garnering Huge Internet Buzz.

Also, Joss's thoughts on the Serenity opening weekend.

Austria leads world in per capita rates of death by falling from cliff.

Who is collecting this data?

In other news, today is a day to rejoice! I came back from poli sci to see the maintenance crew's cart outside the door. They believe they fixed the problem with the leak, and someone should be by in the next few days to repair the hole in the ceiling. Now if only something could be done about the hole in the wall and the mauled bedroom carpet...

I'm surprised at how far below projected gross the ticket sales have been for Serenity this weekend. $10.1 million, when people were predicting $17m. I was under the impression that the money from the pre-screenings would be included in the Opening Weekend total. I guess I was misinformed.

Ah well. We've thoroughly trounced all the other movies that opened this weekend, coming in second to Flightplan, and Joss predicted that the film would be a slow burn. And I'm going again next week and bringing Ko and Deep along with. It'll work out.

Edit: CHUD gives their take, and Nikki Rocco (Universal's head of Distribution) shares her thoughts.

*snorks* Oh, that's horrible! Major Serenity spoilers, but come to think of it, you'd only get it if you'd already been spoiled! Spoilers in the comments, though.

Oh! I forgot to mention that I won the Buffy Season 6 DVDs in the raffle! Rather amusing, as I'd won my original set in the trivia contest at last year's Pennsylvania Shindig! Now I can donate the old set (which was somewhat mauled in my suitcase on the way up to Philly when a bottle leaked) to the library. Unless one of my friends wants it, I guess. The discs are in perfect condition, and I repaired the packaging as best I could with electrical tape and sharpie.

Whee! I spent all yesterday at Phauxcon, which was fabulous. It's so much fun to throw all the barriers down and allow yourself to totally geek out IRL. A lot of the discussions centered on fanfic (as all but two of us are writers) and thematic analysis of the shows, but we also had silly features like Saville Row's "Intro to Smallville" (for those of us tuning in for James--nary a sentence went by without the word "pretty"), and Mary's intriguing presentation on "'Shipping in the Jossverse," in which she drew surprising parallels between the fandom demographics and their preferred pairings. As a spuffy fan, I feel I'm in good company.

One result of these panels and the conversations between and after was the blessing of more recs than you could shake a stick at. I found that I had a bunch of favourite authors and fics in common with Mary, so we're going to exchange recs. I also learned that I definitely need to read Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files. Perhaps after I finish Anansi Boys.

I also shared some of my fanvidding ideas, so I now consider myself obligated to get on the ball and start experimenting. And after Savvy, Z, and the gang saw my Sandman Project, several asked if I'd consider doing title header illustrations for their fanfic, which is something I'd never really thought about before. It's so much fun to feel in high demand!

I look forward to hanging out with my new friends on LJ! It's so great to meet like-minded people.

Hiss! I so ardently dislike Orson Scott Card for his political opinions, but when he gives such extravagant praise for Serenity...
Well, guess what.

It's great.

I'm not going to say it's the best science fiction movie, ever.

Oh, wait. Yes I am.
And that's only the tip of the iceberg. He compares Serenity to Hamlet. His review is probably going to convince a lot of his readers to see the film. I'm grateful to him, and the two of his books I read I loved, but I still don't like him.

At least I can get behind this glowing review from Paul Ens, the director of Lucas Online at LucasFilm, who pimped the film at StarWars.com: If you're a fan of Star Wars, you really owe it to yourself to check out the Serenity movie. Unless, of course, you don't like adventure, excitement, laughter and fun.

Also, as of this morning, Serenity was kicking butt and taking names at the Yahoo!Movies "Top Rated of All Time", and the Firefly DVDs are up to #3 on Amazon.

Oh, wow! It was just pointed out to me that the actress who plays River's teacher at the beginning of Serenity also plays Walt's mom on Lost. I knew she looked familiar!

Also, randomly from the front page of IMDB, today is the birthday of Efren Ramirez, who played Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite, and their movie of the day is the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors! A good day for geekiness!

Imelda Staunton as Umbridge? YES. I've only seen her in Vera Drake, but from that, I can tell that she'd be phenomenal in the role.

Linked from various people: The Shining as a romantic comedy. Utterly BRILLIANT.

And speaking of UTTERLY BRILLIANT, I'm tickled pink that every other post on my flist is about Serenity. :D

Serenity. Even after the third time, it doesn't get any easier. *heavy sigh* This movie is phenomenal.

I went with a bunch of Browncoats that had gathered for Phauxcon. There wasn't anyone there I knew really well; most of them I had encountered tangentially on LJ. They proved to be a tremendously fun group of people, and I look forward to getting to know them better. And who did I run into at the theatre, but Aaron! He had read in my blog that I was attending this screening, and so he chose to attend the same time. He even brought his two roommates, both fans.

As one would expect, the most major change from the pre-screenings was the music. The tone of the "introduction to the crew" scene changed completely! Has anyone timed that phenomenal one-shot at the beginning of that scene? It's awe inspiring. I wonder how many takes that took.

Most of the other changes were fairly small. They changed the spelling of Book's name, for one. The other change, while tiny, is terribly significant to me and spoilery as all hell, so if you want my take on it, catch me on IM. I've sat on this stuff for four months; I can wait a few more weeks until it's opened in other countries, and the Browncoats there get a chance to see it. Cult of Lincoln will remain spoiler-free!

Edit: Oh, and I was the only one in costume. We had a "Joss Whedon is my master now" shirt, but other than that? Nada. Not even a Jayne hat. It was pathetic. Of course, being the only one dressed up, I got quite a lot of compliments. It made up for the comments I got while grocery shopping in costume before the movie, wherein a half-dozen people asked if I knew about the smudge of charcoal on my cheek.
