Calling all Firefly fans and friends of Firefly fans that want to make their acquaintances happy beyond words!

We need to show Fox how big the demand is for a Firefly soundtrack. All relevant info is here. Please take a couple minutes of your time and let Fox know that fans want a soundtrack, and how much moolah Fox stands to gain from such a venture!

Has anyone successfully managed to use Photoshop's Save For Web function on a batch process? I have a bunch of jpgs, and I'd like to compress their size without sacrificing too much quality, and I've had great results with Save For Web. Of course, there are so many of them, and doing them individually would be nightmarish. I've been ignoring the problem lately, but now Alicey is having the same issue. Has anyone managed to get it to work?

HBP Spoiled for Tom Hanks. Utterly hilarious, and merrily spoiler-laden. Ganked from Indy!

Way funnier than the bookstore drive-by, which was more mean than funny. Also, he said that he was in Dallas, and the storefront looked unsettlingly like the Borders I went to. If I hadn't dressed in costume and was stuck with ticket #239, might I have been one of those unlucky people that happened to be outside at the time?

*snorks* After watching the deeply traumatic "Dive From Clausen's Pier", I continued my persuit of ex-Mutant Enemy-ers by watching the trailer for the new "Posiedon Adventure", co-starring Adam Baldwin. The opening of the trailer was set to "The Lusty Month of May", from Camelot, clearly chosen for its nostalgic quality and appropriateness for a cruise ship of very wealthy individuals. This delighted me, as I love Camelot, and it was so unexpected!

But as the trailer got more and more intense, the song kept going, overlayed with a counterpoint of more action-appropriate music. What a powerfully ironic directorial choice, I thought to myself! Then I paused the trailer because my mom came in, but the music was still going. Then I realized that I'd forgotten to turn off iTunes when I'd muted my computer, and iTunes had just happened to be playing "The Lusty Month of May" on its methodical plod through my library, and it just happened to be perfectly synched to sound fitting with the trailer. I'm half disappointed, half "wow, that was serendipitously awesome".

Challenge from The Guardian: the pivotal scene near the end in the style of other famous authors. I'm shocked that Geoffrey Willans (Molesworth) wasn't represented!

*snorks* The MPAA has insisted on a modification of the new Serenity poster, removing River's gun. Apparently, this is because of some rule regarding the use of firearms by one underage. If they object so to weaponry, shouldn't they be modifying the Star Wars posters, too? If I remember correctly, according to my shooting script, Luke was supposed to be 16 in ANH (while River is 17 at the time of Serenity), yet there he is, in almost every poster, weilding either a blaster or a lightsaber. You know what effect that might have on impressionable young children!

(Yes, I understand why it's important. It's just funny, and a bit annoying. The poster was growing on me.)

Tonight, I held a mini-Shindig of sorts to celebrate the Sci-Fi Channel premiere of Firefly. Cherise, Burkhead, and Chungy helped ring in the new dawn for Browncoats! Or something. Fun was had! Strawberries, too. I wore my Kaylee costume, because it's something that's easy to throw on and that I can actually wear in public without looking too out of place.

I hope Burkhead enjoyed it. She was the only uninitiated present (Cherise and Chungy went to the Serenity screenings with me), and she's not as sci-fi geekish as the rest of us. Then the commercial breaks (which were WAY too often) and really lame broadcast quality didn't really work in our favor, either. The entire Serenity Valley opening sequence was mostly just black screen. *kicks TV* We should have just popped in the DVD, but I got a bit enamored with the idea of seeing commercials for Firefly (there was a Serenity TV spot! But it was just clips from the first trailer).

Afterwards, we watched the first 45 minutes or so of Brad Neely's hilarious Wizard People, Dear Reader. We frequently drowned out the audio track, we were laughing so hard. I encourage all Potter fans to download the tracks and set up your own mini-screenings! Too funny for words.

Next, we watched bits from the Republican National Convention on The Daily Show's Indecision 2004 DVD, which we had bought this afternoon, once Mom realized Jon Stewart's genius in the "Fresh Air" interview this morning on NPR. Huzzah! Then we went to Starbucks, then back home for more Daily Show.

And I return to the net to learn that the rumors are true, and that James Marsters is going to be on Smallville. *cackles* At least this time it's a show that's really fun to ridicule watch. His guest spot on The Mountain is one hour of my life that I can never have back. But now Smallville? Hah, if Lost wasn't on at the same time last year, I might have even watched last season. It's a nice break from schoolwork, because all the characters on the show are so deliciously stupid. And it's fun to play "Figure out the technical details of individual special effects on TV shows". I love Zoic. Check out their Demo Reel some time. They did all the Joss stuff, too!

Does anyone know where I could watch the trailer for that Mental Trauma Waiting to Happen, The Dive from Clausen's Pier? You know, the Lifetime movie with Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn on Buffy) and Sean Maher (Simon on Firefly) as groin buddies? I seem to be approaching this movie like a train wreck. It's so terrifying, yet I can't look away...

Does anyone know if The Inside was on the night before last? I know that next week they're getting preempted, but I hadn't heard that it was going to be last week as well. Feh.

A lovely fanvid for Mal's Song, by Escape Key. It seems that a lot of people are having difficulty playing it in Quicktime (myself included), but I was able to play it in the most recent version of VLC.

The Signal #3 is out! Lots of fun. And while ripping my CDs to my new laptop, I realized DUH. That's why the 'I like Chinese' song sounded familiar! It's from Monty Python!

It feels weird posting this in the wake of what happened in London today, but in my continued celebration of all things British (or Welsh, rather), Jasper Fforde's The Big Easy comes out today. Those unfamiliar with Jasper Fforde should acquaint themselves immediately, starting with The Eyre Affair.

In other British news, a group of teachers has proposed that the word "fail" be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils.

Oh! If you haven't yet jumped on the Firefly bandwagon (what's wrong with you?), here is a great list of reasons to check out the DVDs or tune in when they're aired on the Sci-Fi channel, starting this Friday.

The idea of seeing episode trailers and advertisements for Firefly make me squeal like a little girl. (And yes, I'm well aware that I am a little girl. Pah.)

Oh -- an addendum to my last post:

If you're trying to remain relatively spoiler-free for Serenity, I'd recommend NOT going through the trailer frame-by-frame and trying to analyze stuff. The trailer actually gives away quite a lot, some of which I don't think I would have wanted to know going in. I know the wait is agonizing, and Joss has just tossed you one heck of a crumb, but if you want to do yourself a favor, you won't try to dissect it too thoroughly.

The International Serenity Trailer is online! Gah, I have chills. The one word to describe it: YES. This is what the movie is like! Delicious Whedonesque snarky dialogue, thrills and hijinks, and oh look! Kaylee is actually in this movie! No sign of Book, though. Oh well. I don't think anyone would deem it spoilery if I said that Book's scenes, while wonderful, aren't exactly trailer material.

THIS is a trailer that would make me interested in seeing the movie. The first trailer, while squeeworthy in its "New Canon! EEEE!" quotient, didn't really do the job.

Gah, I can't wait until September 30th, when everyone else gets to see the movie.

P.S. Did they change the Serenity logo again? Not really sure whether I like the new more than the old, but as far as I'm concerned, the further they can get away from that Papyrus font, the better.

LA LA LA LA TRAILER LA!

Huh. First glimpse at the (prototype) Serenity poster. I'm feeling rather "Meh" about it. Way too mainstream sci-fi for my tastes (PLEASE make them change the tagline!), but I guess I could learn to like it. The poster, that is! The movie itself is fantastic.

Plus: A review of the Serenity presentation at Comic-Con (contains very mild spoilers--little more than what we saw in the trailer).

Just finished HPB. For the sake of those like me that avoid spoilers like the plague, I won't say anything specific about it for at least a week, but I will say that it was exceptionally satisfying. I know of a lot of people that will be furious, a lot of people that will be cheering wildly, and a lot of people who will feel thwarted. Me? I'm off to start researching new entries for "What's in a Name".

Got HP&HBP! Over dinner, Mom came up with the brilliant idea of dressing as Trelawney, and after throwing together a costume in under an hour, I ended up winning the costume contest! My prize: the coveted first spot in line! Of course, because I didn't want to take the award away from the kids, I gave the #1 ticket to an adorable pair of siblings dressed as Harry and Ginny. The resemblance was definitely prizeworthy! And it wasn't really a sacrifice, as I had been given ticket #239 when I arrived, but because of the awesomeness of my costume, the manager gave me ticket #4. And I got the satisfaction of seeing those adorable kids' faces light up with unbridled glee when I handed them the ticket. Good gravy, those kids were cute.

I'll post photos tomorrow. I've got a book to devour!

The Sci-Fi channel website just put their page up for Firefly. Looks great, but I have one beef with it: THE FACT THAT THE BOX CONTAINS A GIRL IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SURPRISE. Why does everyone have to use that clip/image when advertising the show?

And Joss, please decide on a first name for Book already. Of the several thousand variations that popped up at the screenings, I'm partial to Merria, pronounced like the pop diva. And have we established Zoe's last name yet? Because that would be nice. Did we ever figure out where "Warren" came from? Was that just a rumor?

Ooh! And I got a copy of the first issue of the Serenity comic yesterday. I chose the Jayne cover, as I've never been fond of Inara and the Mal cover is just scary.

Aside: Doesn't Mal have blue eyes? Silly comic colorists that don't check up on these things... But of course, that's irrelevant compared to the total "HUH?" that is Inara's appearance.

Also, I know Joss wrote the story, but canonically, Simon isn't oblivious to Kaylee's affections. He just is totally clueless when it comes to responding to them. She just needs to get him drunk again. That would help.

Decided yesterday afternoon to drop out of the Musical Theatre program. It's disappointing, as the curriculum is perfectly geared to what I was hoping for, but I was just being driven mad by my fellow students, to the point that I felt it wasn't really worth the time and aggravation. I'm getting a full refund, which was also a deciding factor. If it was nonrefundable, I would have just tried to suck it up and keep going. So yes. Disappointing, but also a huge relief.

Also, a computer guy came by yesterday and showed me how to connect the two computers, so that I could transfer all the necessary files etc. So now everything computer-wise is hunky-dory. And Harry Potter comes out tomorrow at midnight! Trala!

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Today was the second day of my three-week long Musical Theatre intensive workshop thing. I signed up, thinking I'd have lots of kids my same age, but no, I'm the oldest one there. There's one other 20 year old, and the overwhelming majority of kids are in junior high. I decided that I could still use the experience, both in terms of performing and in dealing with large numbers of kids, but still, by the end of the day, I wanted to kill every child in the room with a shovel. Was I ever that obnoxiously whiny and egocentric? I know I was egocentric, but I always throught of myself as humorously endearing and not really serious.

The past two days, I've tried to be outgoing and thoughtful, trying to engage those on the fringes, too shy or awkward to strike up a conversation. Bad idea. I've learned that this is a recipe for INSTANT CLING. The first day, one girl turned out to have an infatuation with long hair, and kept trying to touch mine when I was focused on other things. She also turned out to have no concept of personal space, and kept trying to follow me around during a break. And she's 15! Shouldn't she have learned some degree of social acceptability by now?

Today, I tried to find an older group to hang out with. It didn't help. I can stil hear their whining, reverberating in my skull. It turns out that EVERY SINGLE GIRL IN THE ENTIRE PROGRAM WANTS TO DO STUFF FROM WICKED. And they act like they're each the biggiest Wicked fan in the entire universe, and that if they have to sing something from Hairspray until the additional material from Wicked has been assigned, that it is unacceptable and totally unfair and that they want to switch into whatever section is doing stuff from Wicked, regardless of the level.

Also, they seemed to have no concept of sharing time, and not being in the spotlight 24/7. We did this big improv exercise, where we split into three groups, then into two smaller teams, and each team came up with a list of occupations for the opposing team members, a setting and time period, and a situation. For ours, we were stranded in a tree in Africa during the Middle Ages, being menaced by a lion. I was a dentist. I told my team that I had an idea for establishing the time period, and to please let me speak first. When we got up to perform, I pointed into the audience at the imaginary lion and said, "Hark! Tis that selfsame beast which smote bold Pyramus and fair Thisbe. And behold its abscessed molar! Fetch the leeches, good sir!" The teachers cracked up, and a fair percentage of the students seemed to get the joke. And I know Shakespeare came several centuries outside the Middle Ages, but whatever. It was effective.

But as soon as I stopped speaking, suddenly everyone wanted to talk. The rest of our performance was completely muddled, because no one could take turns unless it we had a pre-established order. Utter chaos. After all the teams went (with similar results), the teachers came up and imparted the importance of sharing time and letting each team member have their moment, but they should have done that with the first group that went, not the last!

I could go on, but I don't want to have to relive everything. I'm sure I sound unbelievably petty and self-absorbed from this, but I assure you, Mother Teresa and Ghandi would have banded together and laid down unholy smackdown on these children after ten minutes, and each day we were there from 9-3:30. Anyway, suffice it to say, I left 15 minutes early, because I just couldn't take any more of it. I sat, baking in the 100 degree sun at the DART station, exhausted physically from all the dancing and mentally from the intense aggravation. And did I mention that I'm slightly anemic, and about to start my period? Not a good combination.

Then I made the mistake of sitting next to this jovial yet clearly unhinged man on the DART train back home, who--and I am not exaggerating here in the least--had worse teeth than Gollum. Poor man, I can't imagine how he could talk or eat without shredding his gums to ribbons. It was either the seat next to him or standing, and after I made eye contact I felt it would be the hight of rudeness if I decided to stand. As soon as I sat down, he smilingly said "I don't bite!", and THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR IMPLANTING THAT MENTAL IMAGE IN MY BRAIN. There would have been no problem if he hadn't said that! The entire ride back, as we carried on conversation, in the darkest, most irrational corners of my imagination, I kept picturing him suddenly flipping out and sinking his teeth into my jugular, like Gollum biting into the soft, white belly of an unsuspecting fish in the intro to "Return of the King." I felt rotten, because he seemed to be a really nice man, and I was picturing such horrible things. Bleh.

Anyway, after all of that, I had 30 minutes to unwind before shipping off to an hour of traffic and four hours of Animation class, which I was totally unprepared for, as my old laptop (with Maya on it) is being unbelievably skanky, and now won't even connect to the internet. And I still haven't gotten it to connect with the new laptop so that I could transfer the files. AAARG. Fortunately, my professor was very understanding, so stuff is more-or-less okay. *sigh*

And that was my day.

Offhand, I can't think of anyone on my flist that would do such a thing, but it's best to be paranoid. Jasper Fforde Appearances Schedule! Woe, nowhere Dallasways. Just Houston and Austin. And he doesn't even have the decency to coordinate it with the Texas Shindig in Austin, August 5-7, that I was idly considering attending. Noooo, he's going through Austin on the 1st. Oh well.

Anyway, my dad's surgery went swimmingly well! Yay for Burkhead's dad, God among Shoulder Surgeons! He'll be coming some time today. *cheers* And at the hospital, I saw boxes of disposable blue-hand gloves, but I was too chicken to steal a pair. But seeing as how everyone at the Pennsylvania Shindig knows me as River, having a pair of blue gloves would be a bit creepy. Of course, that didn't stop me from bringing along my Blue Sun shirt...

Our family has a new member! Delivered at 3:41PM on July 7th, 2005, weighing approximately 7 pounds. 1.67" thin x 14.2"(w) x 10.3"(d).

Meet Charlie, named for Dominic Monaghan's character on Lost, because I thought it would be funny to name a computer after an addict. He's an impressionable young Dell Precision M70, with a gig of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive.

Today, I finally got rid of HAL, my ancient, ancient computer that had just been gathering dust. Lots of dust. As I dismantled him, I hummed "Daisy, Daisy" and felt terribly clever. And today, I begin the Great Data Transfer from Jimmy to Charlie, as Jimmy is going to be wiped, then sent to my sister. Thank you, Jimmy, for years of loyal-ish service! Thank you, HAL, for being a big box with electrons in it!

Dude. The Brits win at life. Well, everything but the US Revolutionary War, but you can blame the French for that. I don't remember anyone daring to crack jokes about 9/11 the day-of, but the British response to the London terrorist attacks has been awe-inspiring. Today, as always, I'm proud to have a mostly-British heritage.

"We are striking aggressively at the terrorists in Iraq, defeating them there, so we do not have to face them on the streets of our own cities." --Dick Cheney

My dad came into my room this morning and woke me up, looking unhappy. Holding up a slip of paper, he said, "UPS tried to deliver your computer yesterday, while we were at dinner."

It wasn't until I logged on to my LJ Friends list that I heard the news. I first saw it mentioned in a LJ_Democrats post, and I initally internalized it as a hypothetical situation, as if someone were trying to bring some point across by setting up some grand metaphor. But within a few seconds, my brain processed that the poster's text was a link. I clicked, and the feeling of horrified disbelief that has swept the world this morning took hold of my throat. I wasn't even aware I was crying until it registered that the suddenly blurry computer screen could be attested to tears.

I got hold of the basic facts, then walked downstairs to find my dad. Instead, I found my mom at the dining room table, eating breakfast and reading the newspaper.

"How could Dad come into my room and wake me up and tell me about my computer," I said, marveling at how out-of-character this would have been for my dad. My mom looked puzzled. I looked over the headlines, and saw no mention of terrorism. "It must have happened after the papers went out," I said, still feeling surreal. At my mom's continued puzzlement, I told her what happened, and broke down again. We spent most of the morning tuned in to NPR.

BBC: Statement claiming London attacks

Londoners, our thoughts and prayers are with you. You rushed to our aid when we were attacked, and we want to repay you for your great magnanimity. Condolances to those whose family and friends were injured or lost, with hopes that London and its people will emerge from such tragedy stronger than ever.

Serenity prequel comic #1 moved to July 13th, and New International Serenity Trailer to air Friday on GMTV. At first I was disappointed, thinking bad luck for the non-Anglians, but then I immediately realized: Duh. It'll be online in seconds. *rewatches horrid quality Comic Con teaser-trailer*

(Why am I still so squeeish over new trailer stuff? I've seen the movie twice!)

Also, why did none of you inform me that the second Firefly podcast had been posted? You all fail. Redeem yourselves by checking out this massive linkpost of Flan sites from Serenity Summer. [Edit: Oh. Because the second podcast was posted today, apparently. And hahaha, these people are so endearingly green.]

Yet more links ganked from Whedonesque! Doug Petrie's role in the script development of Fantastic Four. Wow. One of my least favourite Buffyverse writers. But his ideas sound nifty, and I'm clearly going to see the movie, so whatever. La!

Sign the Save "The Inside" Petition! Or if you don't watch "The Inside" sign it as a "Stop Fox From Cancelling Smart, Promising Shows Midway Through the First Season, Before They Even Had a Chance to Take Off."

Remember Firefly! Remember Wonderfalls! Remember Tru Calling, which I never actually watched! Remember the Alamo! And then we're going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! Yeaaughhh!

Obviously, because Fox is clearly beyond help, this petition is not going to do anything, but at least it'll make me feel better about my righteous indignation. Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

Tangentially Related: More guerilla marketing for Serenity, and the release (finally!) of PVP and ThinkGeek's Joss Whedon is my Master Now shirt. Also, today was supposed to be the release date for the first issue of the Serenity prequel comic, but people are lame. At my preferred comic book store, they hadn't even shipped them out yet. Hmm... I wonder if all these shipping issues are karmic backlash for me forgetting to send Renata her card while she was at camp. I found the letter under a big stack of stuff on my desk this morning. I was sure that I had sent it. Clearly, I fail at the US Postal Service.

*resists urge to hurl computer out window*

I hope all this CD-R/DVD stuff turns out to be software glitches, because otherwise, my sister is going to be a very unhappy camper. And it took 5 minutes for me to startup tonight, the majority of which featured a black screen and a blinking cursor. This laptop is an overlarge, internet-enabled paperweight.

When is the new computer arriving? I got an email Sunday saying that it had been shipped, and it was supposed to be Next Day delivery. Sure, we had the holiday on Monday, but it's now been two business days.

*whinges excessively*

*laughs loudly and obnoxiously (as my mother can attest to)* Dear gravy, if these are real... Japanese "Smoking Manners" Advertisements. Go RIGHT NOW and see them, unless you're in a library or at work or something. Totally worksafe, but also guaranteed to elicit great guffaws of laughter.

Estonians snatch world wife-carrying title again

Speaking of humorously antiquated gender roles, I've been reading Finding Serenity, and WOW, the article on chivalry simultaneously cracks me up (though not in the way the author intended) and makes me want to hit the writer with a large bat. Jane Espenson was wise to follow it up with the fluffy "Our show could kick your show's scrawny uniformed backside" humor piece, comparing Firefly to Enterprise, to ease our strangle hold on the couch cushion. It makes me want to go back and read the Zoe essay on "Updating the Woman Warrior", to purge my mind of Wright's frankly chauvanistic drivel.

It's as if he faults Wash for not being as fierce a fighter as Zoe, and undermines Simon's sacrifices for River. It's as if he faults Joss for having strong female characters that don't necessarily need the sexist level of "protection" from men present in Medieval times and in old Westerns, or men that occasionally act selfishly. Furthermore, he appears to have missed the entire point of Shindig. It showed that Mal has a great amount of respect for Inara and explains away his use of the word "whore", but without diminishing Inara in the process. To have Inara playing the damsel in distress would be demeaning to her and undermine the level of power Companions are trained to command. If you expect Western-style Chivalry, where the woman must be in a position of weakness, you're not going to find it here.

I wanted to scream when I read this:
In the episode "War Stories," in which the pilot Wash argues with his wife and insists on going on a dangerous mission in her place, nothing is made of the fact that this act saves her from kidnap and torture: the portrayal makes Wash's behavior seem petulant rather than heroic, as if there is something wrong with a husband trying to safeguard his own wife.
There's nothing wrong with a husband trying to safeguard his own wife. Indeed, every time he pulls off some spectacular new feat of piloting, he's safeguarding his wife as well as his entire crew. But I've got news for you. In that scene, he was being petulant rather than heroic. He was feeling inadequate and "out of the loop", and he wanted to prove that he could be as strong as Zoe in the thieving department. "Dangerous mission"? Mal makes a point of how "this is a milk run", stressing that this was the only reason he let Wash get away with it. Stop turning my realistic, lovable, flawed, three-dimensional characters into boring, "selfless" chauvantists!

Later in the episode, he has the chance to perform the extraordinary, and he does. After withstanding hours of horrifically sadistic torture, where most men would fail, he finds the strength within himself to keep going, and convinces Zoe to join him on a mission to get Mal back. He has been at the volcano's edge, and we meet the real man, and he's someone you don't want to cross. Wash proves to be truly heroic, but apparently that's not good enough for John C. Wright, because Mal isn't a girl.

And I'm going to stop ranting here, because it's silly and not really worth my time or frustration.

Can birds moonwalk? Turns out they can. The video is hilarious!

Also, speaking of weird dances, check out the new UK promo for Lost. It has nothing to do with the show, it oddly resembles a Calvin Klein perfume ad, and whoever made it apparently mistook Charlie for Boone, but man if it isn't pretty. *loves herself some Jin/Sun*

Catching up:

The Inside is (basically) cancelled. Good gravy, is Fox ever going to give Tim Minear a break? (Edit: PLEASE say that the "Adam Baldwin undercover in drag" episode Tim spoke of in passing is among those that indeed will be made)

To cheer me up, an all-a capella rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It reminds me of DaVinci's Notebook's remix of the Dreidel Song, only on ten times the hallucinogen.

Other than the whole Sandra Day O'Connor thing (which, admittedly is a pretty big "other than"), today was a good day. Daddy's birthday, as well as the kickoffs of lj-communities "Summer of Serenity" and the second-annual "Summer of Spike". Not to mention Canada Day!

Tomorrow, my parents and I are headed off to East Texas to spend the weekend at my mom's friend's house. T'will be keen! Lots of photographic opportunities and suchlike!

Meanwhile, just got back from Dad's birthday dinner and a showing of "March of the Penguins", which was utterly fascinating and so cute I could die. *squeals over the ikkle penguin babies*

Sandra Day O'Connor retired. Couldn't she have waited until Bush was out of office? She's a moderate conservative!

So how much longer are we going to have the right to choose? Are we supposed to entrust our reproductive freedom to a man who appointed Bolton to the U.N.? By what majority of Senators would be necessary to oppose the appointment? Urgh, I thought it was just Rehnquist that would be replaced over Bush's term, and he's conservative already.
