TWOP reviews Serenity, chok full of more philosophy than you can shake a stick at.

Serenity kicks butt and takes names at the Smart Popcorn awards.

AND A TRANSITION: 2005 Nebula Nominees include Terry Pratchett for Best Novel (Going Postal) and Joss Whedon for Best Script (Serenity).

The Christian Guide to Fantasy: Terry Pratchett. Contains mini-reviews for most of the Discworld books, pointing out potential danger zones for Christian morality! Utterly hilarious. Though they totally neglect to mention Carrot and Angua's sordid one-night stand in their review of Men at Arms. They must be losing their edge. :D

Early yesterday, I posted the Thomas and Bianca pic to the Dresden Files mailing list, where author Jim Butcher occasionally hangs out, and I've been waiting with bated breath to see his reaction to the image. Well, he just replied to an email sent a few days ago. HE'S CHECKING HIS EMAIL. AND SOON HE WILL READ THE ONE FROM ME.

I am such a dork.

GLEE! From IMDB:
The Walt Disney Co. is planning to revive traditional hand-drawn animation next year with its live-action/animated Enchanted, Disney watcher Jim Hill reported on his website today (Wednesday). A traditionally animated test sequence has already been created for the film by veteran Disney animator James Baxter, best known for his supervision of the character Belle in Beauty and the Beast, according to Hill. "And those who have seen this particular piece of rough animation say that it is 'simply stunning. A wonderful throwback to the sort of films that Disney used to make.'" Baxter, Hill said, has been secretly working on the sequence with a small crew at his own studio in Pasadena, and, he added, his work is likely to be displayed by Pixar's John Lasseter and Ed Catmull as they make their well-known case for reviving hand-drawn animation to Disney chief Robert Iger. Said Hill: "They're going to tell Iger: 'Doesn't that look terrific? People are really going to eat this picture up. They've been waiting for Disney to do a new film that features traditional animation. Which is why this movie is going to do HUGE box office next year.'"
Now if only they'd revive their musical tradition!

Dear Writers of House and Grey's Anatomy,

Are you guys having torrid affairs with each other and letting slip precious information about the obscure medical ailments your characters will face? Because the overlap is just getting creepy.

(Of course, House is several trillion times better than Grey's, so this isn't really a problem, but whatever)

Bwee! My Figure Modeling critique went swimmingly. I feel that my model was one of the strongest, if not the strongest of our class. I still have a lot of work to do before the end of the semester, but still. Whoo!

And afterwards, I asked my professors to check the anatomy in my latest CG. One of the characters is in a rather difficult pose, and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes. Everything more-or-less passed muster, and I got some lovely compliments! Hopefully, I'll finish the image the next few days. I'm quite pleased with it so far!

Blogger ate this entry, so I'm reposting:

A hilarious comparison of the romantic exploits of Veronica Mars and Buffy Summers.

Unrelated, but HAHAHAHA, Riley's Mary Sue of a wife is going to be a Bond Girl! There's something so deliciously *right* about that.

And speaking of Joss things, I have a severe case of Region 4 envy. All those delicious 2-disk Serenity extras, available in Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Oceania, South America, but not available to me. When are we going to get the shiny Browncoat edition we all yearn for? One where the split-second "Mal touches one of Wash's dinosaurs when he asks 'So, you gonna ride shotgun with me, help me fly?'" clip is reinstated?

And in the "laughed 'til I cried" category, If Joss Wrote For Peanuts.

Meanwhile, Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio. Were their costumes designed by a blind woman that HATED them?

Ko and I decided that Snowboardcross would be so much cooler if athletes could set each other on fire. They'd carry torches to demonstrate Olympic spirit, and they'd wear flame-retardent suits to protect their tender flesh. Extra points would be awarded based on how much of their suit is not charred. And the commentators could finally be literal when they declare a certain athlete to be "on fire!"

100 Years of Music on the London Underground -- very cool

Your 'Verse, Your Words -- fanmade audio commentary tracks for Serenity and Firefly. I suppose it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a Browncoat People, Dear Reader!

Geeks in Love -- I was delighted to see Puppet Pal Dumbledore in there, but then I see on the credits screen, the music was done by Neil Cicierega, who created the Potter Puppet Pals!

Also featuring Neil's music: The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, and more here!

I'm looking for great romantic movies with thwarted endings. Either one of the characters dies, or they don't end up together, or whatever. I'm planning a Festival of Merry Misandry tomorrow night, for all my female friends without boyfriends (or girlfriends, as the case may be), one I like to call "Sergeant Pepper-Spray's Lonely Hearts Club Night". Ice cream, chocolate, and a pox on all things male!

My list of potentials: (that I have in my DVD collection)
  • West Side Story
  • Casablanca
  • Moulin Rouge
  • Edward Scissorhands
  • Vita E Bella
  • Finding Neverland
Of course, a lot of these are really depressing. I'm wondering if I should shift the theme from "If I don't get a boyfriend, then neither do you!" to Offbeat Romance and do something along the lines of Amelie or Bridget Jones.

Thoughts?

Just great. I wake up to a massive puddle of water around our fridge. Fortunately, the only thing damaged was our Yellow Pages. Man, as soon as we get one thing fixed, another thing breaks.

Except how WOAH, it's not our fridge that's broken! Ko just stepped outside, and there's another massive puddle of water, this one about 8-10 feet long, and a smaller puddle on the border between their room and the room on the other side of them. Hopefully, the maintenance guys should be by in the next few hours.

Oh, and here are some before, during, and after pictures of our Hatch Escapades!

Whee! Tim Minear's new pilot, "Drive" was just picked up! From Buffistas, via Whedonesque:
Okay, so now I can mention, my pilot got picked up today. Go team.

Okay, the show is called "Drive." The network is, um, Fox. And it's a big, sprawling, ensemble that is utterly serialized. In the pilot, for instance, there are... let me count... about 16 possibly regular characters.

Which means I got me some killin' to do.
Well, it's nice that he's so honest about it. XD

Now let's just hope that this show is as awesome as Firefly, Wonderfalls, Angel, and The Inside, yet doesn't follow the example of the three out of four Fox shows that were cancelled after half a season! *is not bitter at ALL*

(This post has been edited due to confusion)

Holy cow. Little Shop is cancelled, as the board couldn't get the rights. They're doing Grease instead. I feel rather guilty that the show I was beginning to regret joining has received the smackdown, that I'm actually feeling happy about news that others around me are heartbroken over, but on the other hand, FREEDOM!

We're getting another hatch! The ceiling leak angst should hopefully be resolved now. Alas, we used up all our hatch jokes on the first one, named "es-CAH-pay", but spelled just like "Escape". Maybe Ko will let me name the other one "Desmond".

Also, I think we're getting the massive hole in the wall fixed!

Haha, so awesome! From engadget: Volvo S80 detects intruders' heartbeats.
Perhaps the nicest thing about living in a city with great public transportation is that we've almost forgotten the gripping panic that used to overcome us each time we went out to the car alone at night, terrified that the proverbial "man-with-the-hook" was secreted away in the backseat somewhere. Well it seems that the engineers at Volvo also know our fear, and have incorporated a heartbeat sensor inside the new S80 sedan that alerts your wireless key fob if there's a criminal-type lying in wait for you as you approach. Although this tech would do a bit to alleviate our irrational fear, the logical side of us realizes that if a ne'er-do-well could crack the rest of Volvo's tight security features to break into our ride unnoticed, he could probably disable this heartbeat sensor as well. Like we said, it's probably best that we stick to public transportation.
So who would be affected by such a device?

On the plus side, Veronica Mars gets to avoid being threatened by a psychopathic murderer, deliberately crashing her car, and being trapped inside a burning refridgerator.

On the negative side, Marty McFly has to find an alternative way of stealing back Biff's sports almanac.

Verdict: WIN!

Someone needs to invent a cure for the common cold NOW. I feel like my head and my entire lymphatic system are stopped up (the nodes on my neck are like marbles), and I start to feel woozy if my head is above the rest of my body for too long. Or if I move too fast, or move in general.

Luna, Umbridge, and Bella casting = WIN.

I'm giddy at the idea of seeing Imelda Staunton as Umbridge, I like what little I've seen of their choice for Bellatrix, and I can definitely see that little girl dovetailing with my mental image of Luna. I'm iffy about the pictures I've seen of Tonks, but I'm still feeling good. After Fiona Weir's brilliant casting of the 4th movie, I'm pretty confident. WOO!

So last night? EEEEE. The Pixar thing was exactly what I would have dreamed it would be. Rather than talking about the too-often-rehashed pipeline process of making a 3D animated movie, he talked about the art of storytelling, and structuring scenes. How to set up an audience and pay them off or surprise them with a twist. In true Pixar fashion, he emphasized the value of storytelling over technical skills.

His first examples were in the structure of music and jokes--the power of an introduction, and how to subvert an audience's expectations--, then he showed us examples of Fred Astaire dance sequences and a Jackie Chan fight scene, in which the characters creatively make use the objects in an environment. He then showed examples of different ways of animating the same line reading and adding your own mannerisms to the script, linking it to his own animation work on Pixar movies. Something inside my head clicked. It was like a divine revelation, coming at me through heavenly chorus, "THIS IS HOW YOU ANIMATE." Thank you, Jesus!

It ended up being about two and a half hours, twice as long as I thought it would be. The Little Shop folks were cool, though. They were finished with the ensemble by the time I got back (I hitched a ride on the Drexel bus, as public transportation was majorly sketchy), so I had time to watch most of Veronica Mars (God bless Timeshifting) before heading down to the Production Meeting at 11.

Life is good.

AARGH! Amy just emailed me, informing me that the DMDers are invited to a presentation at Philadelphia University with Doug Sweetland, Supervising Animator for Pixar. Starting at exactly at the same time as my first Little Shop rehearsal tonight. I've emailed the schedule guy, asking if I can be an hour or two late.

This is just too cool to pass up. Besides, we're essentially just learning music tonight, and I've had these songs memorized since I was eight.

Edit: Woo! Got permission! *pumps fist*
